Sounds familiar (Initially Coldplay)

I'm starting out by mentioning Coldplay, but feel free to add other themes which seem very close to something older.

Driving home the other night I heard Coldplay: Everglow. I couldn't shake the idea that I knew the theme already.

Is it just me, or can anyone else pick up the hymn "When a knight won his spurs" in this one?

When a knight

A bit more Googling gives the original as a hymn by Jan Struther (Joyce Anstruther) written to a folk melody (Stowey)

Cheers

I think I started a similar thread some years back but it is always fun :-)

Obvious ones

Elvis Presley "Only fools rush in" = Plaisir D'Amour (French)
Ditto "Wooden Heart" = Muss i denn (German)
Seekers "Carnival is over" = Stenka Rasin (Russian)
Simple Minds "Belfast Child" = She moved through the fair (Irish)

Or are you looking for the not so obvious ones?

Cheers

Slade 'My oh my' the topline is almost exactly the same as a 1940's song (which was well within copyright), 'coming in on a wing and a prayer'.

The Slade son is actually based on an old folk tune which sometimes goes under the title "Peg and Awl)

Peg and Awl

Slade "My oh My"

Nice to see Messrs Lee and Holder pay homage to the fol tradition.

"Groovy Kind of Love" originally by Wayne Fontana, more recently Phil Collins is part of a sonatina by Clementi a contemporary of Mozart.

Oh - Status Quo "Burning Bridges" based on "Darby Kelly". One of my favourite songs for a ceilidh. How could I forget!

I just had a flash back to Gry Aspey (in lecture mode, bless him :-) ) Saying "Some say it's all rock and roll to me. I say it's all jig and reel to me" Quiet good I thought.
