I've stopped going to GRCH as most of the concerts involved the same musicians and the same stilted formula......and often the same elitist audience. I believe there is more heart and warmth in Country Music these days, all these young kids looking for a sound that will sell....they bear no relation to the spirit and involvement of the revival. Does audience participation no longer count for anything?....that was the reason we had hundreds at our local folk club everyone believed they were part of something wonderful....something which other music couldn't reach. Folk music was of the people, for the people, not just anther marketing opportunity. |

However, the "themed" concerts have now become very predictable. I shan't make it through this year but wish everyone well. |

Most of the celtic nations are represented - not England though. I think that Scotland is the featured country this year. |

I always go to hear June T, but her backing is getting a bit dire, she's at her best when unaccompanied or with a single accompanist. |

28 Jan 17 - 08:10 PM (#3835432) Subject: RE: BBC Celtic Connections 2017 From: Tattie Bogle Drifting slightly from the BBC part of the thread name, rave reviews for the second "101 Scottish Songs" concert of songs from the book of same name, aka "The Wee Red Book": Akenaton might have even liked that, and also the one coming up on 29th Jan with Ian and Fraser Bruce, "Auld Heids, New Hats" which seeks to re-create that wonderful folk club atmosphere of days gone by that you're nostalging about. Being a squeeze-box player, I just had to go and see "Leveret" last Saturday: excellent, as was the support by the Ross Miller band. Also anyone who went to "The Transports" concert, a re-creation of the folk opera by Peter Bellamy, has been waxing lyrical about it. I saw an earlier re-creation in Sidmouth 3 or 4 years back and was not totally wowed by it, but there was a different line-up for this new production, which might have made a difference. Mixed reports of the Olivia Newton-John concert: too much personal misery on display was the verdict of several of my friends. Reviewer Sue Wilson in The Scotsman, did give the whole concert 4 stars (but that might have been upped by John McCusker's band as support) - but she also came up with the dictionary swallowing phrase re the 3 ladies doing the other half of the concert: "their expression at worst was crashingly, cloyingly platitudinous". I'll be back over tomorrow to see "La Banda Europa": a fantsatic creation of Jim Sutherland's: I saw the concert they did a few years back and was totally blown away by it, so hope for more great things. Then next weekend, more squeeze-box - Sharon Shannon! One of my heroines. |

Irish 'catters will understand why I kept expecting a large, jolly presenter to appear from the wings... Headed off to "The House of Song" - which turned out to be a late-night singaround. The group has been going about 6 years, was started by Anne Neilson, Gordeanna McCulloch and Ronnie Clark, all with excellent folk / trad credentials. During 'Celtic' we offer three Sunday afternoons of alternative naethin-tae-dae-wi' the big festival events. Last week was a selection of our members and friends offering Burns songs, today was Archie Fisher being interviewed by Adam McNaughton then singing from some members (many of whom are weel kent performers in their own right) and the last hour was an 'Archie' concert. Great day! We have another event next Sunday, Carol Anderson fiddling accompanied by guitarist Martin (canny remember his surname) plus singing from members and friend -- and audience! You would enjoy our sessions- - - sometimes guests, mostly just us looking at ballads and traditional songs. And - you could always come along to Strachur Smiddy when Folk at the Forge is on, ten minutes away frae yer hoose and definitely 'old fashioned type folk event! |

As well as Fraser and Ian Bruce, the quartet includes Pete Clark and Gregor Lowrey. Although their Celtic Connections show is now in the past, they are touring the show. Also BBC ALBA often shows repeats of shows from Celtic Connections and other festivals in previous years: notably, recently, they have re-run last year's great Chieftains and friends concert on a couple of occasions. Look out for Cuirm and Port too: I have several episodes recorded as "series record" on the Tivo box! |

07 Feb 17 - 05:17 PM (#3837414) Subject: RE: BBC Celtic Connections 2017 From: GUEST So as well as the BBC rolling up with their pantechnicons, Celtic Music Radio were broadcasting from the festival - and put considerably more hours "on-air" than the BBC! We had 4 live stages running - every weekday from 11-5 we were live from the Buchanan Suite, up at the top of the concert hall, and from our own Admiral St premises at weekends. We had different guests visiting us every hour for live sessions and interviews - I think there were 81 in total, ranging from main stage headliners (Le Vent Du Nord, Blue Rose Code, Rab Noakes were my personal highlights) through to up and coming whippersnappers :-) We also broadcast the "Celtic Connections on Campus" series from Caledonian University - 3 or 4 bands each lunchtime - and the Danny Kyle Open Stage (5 bands each day throughout the festival). Great music, and great fun - all done by volunteers.
