Dingle Regatta - tune origins

the common 3 part version was composed by Seán Ó Riada, or perhaps was two different tunes amalgamated, can anyone confirm that this tune was in fact a bastardisation by this "composer".
Musicians from Sliabh Luchra seem reluctant to play this COMPOSITION, but prefer the more subtle 2 part version.

Wouldn't be the same without the standing up bits in part three, Dick. I never suspected that it was such a politically-charged tune!

I thought it was 'accidentally' put together from three pre-existing tunes by Paddy Maloney of The Chieftains - or so he claimed!

Am I right in thinking the two part version is sometimes called Tom Billy's slide around sliabh luchra ?

There's a lengthy conversation about it on The Session website. Put the tune in tbe search box. Whether you'll be especially enlightened is a moot point.

wouldn't you think the tune would be a source of civic pride, and there should be a cabinet in the town hall devoted to its history?

Or perhaps a leprechaun robot in a yachtie outfit sitting on a chair at the entrance which stood up and said "Hi ho!" when its motion detector spotted you coming in.

Aye, it's a lonesome road to Dingle.

I have that cassette too, Keith. Gawd knows where it is, but I do remember the tune in just two parts.

that would be more appropriate at sean o riadas grave, to stop him resting in peace, an object lesson in how to ruin a good tune and turn it into a bit of junk, just like what they have done to the wild rover

It would be great IMO if people would abandon the horrible 3 part junk, standing up and passing wind version, and play the original version

Hey, it's not that bad, Dick, and you can always go for a pee if you suspect it's coming up!
