It picks up speed into a rousing chorus of "row tow we chased 'em and row tow we rattled 'em; row tow we chased 'em, the little pack o' tailors." Lyrics not in DT under that title. The verse starts "I went down to Dublin..." so it looks like same song. Just a guess, but "ows" of around and routed from version you cited may have gotten crunched down into nonsense words by later singers. Anyway, found it on "High Hills and Mountains" album by Jean Ritchie, who credits it to Elizabeth Cronin in County Cork. You can find it in O'Neill's MUSIC OF IRELAND. I have also heard the "little pack of tailors" on an album called "Celtic Mouth Music" put out by ellipsis arts. It sounds to me mostly like lilting the reel. The words are either in Irish or just nonsense. The notes credit Elizabeth Cronin and read as follows. 'Jean Ritchie and George Pickow collected this and some 50 other tunes by Cork singer Bess Cronin...The recordings had considerable impact -- Cronin's quiet style inspired many revival singers, and "The Little Pack of Tailors", which is sometimes deployed as a 'dandling' song by Irish mothers to bounce babies, has since been performed by many artists, including Len Graham. Cronin died in 1956.' I hope this information is of help to you. |
