Tune Req: Wind That Shakes the Barley

I have heard a version of the wind that shakes the barley which has a chorus and is quite fast. Not the jig or the slow one done by delores keen or the clancy bros... Anyone know about it please.

See the Irish tune index on my website for the oldest, in 4/4 time. www.erols.com/olsonw. The title has become somewhat of a 'floater'. See S. P. Bayard's 'Dance to the Fiddle, March to the Fife', #162, #321 (Alt. title for the "Keel Row"

I have a version that is in 4/4 and is listed as a reel. It's in a song book so I've never heard it played. But it does have a second part or chorus, as you mentioned. I apologise for my technical inadequacies: I don't know text to midi or ABC. Margo

Well, I see Bruce O. posted just as I did. A much more informative answer! Thanks, Bruce

Solas on the album sunny spells and scattered showers do a version of this song, it is quite fast and has a latin beat and flamenco sytle guitar with it. Any good?

In the Fiddlers Fake Book they have music for The Wind that Shakes the Barley which is in reel time and has two parts A and B ( as opposed to C and M say).

I have just put the tune that the Clancy's sing and that Solas uses on Mudcat MIDIs it is in 6/8 time....

I know the Solas version jazzes it up.... good version.. great CD... but the tune is basically the same...

There's a rebel song "Little Pack O Tailors," set to "Wind that Shakes..." It picks up speed into a rousing chorus of "row tow we chased 'em and row tow we rattled 'em; row tow we chased 'em, the little pack o' tailors." Lyrics not in DT under that title. Will post if there's any interest.

Markf, I have that as "all around we routed them, and all around we chased them..." Sometimes called As I was going to Dublin (I met a pack of tailors...)

I've added the c 1812, Irish common time "The Wind that Shakes the Barley" to the Miscellaneous ABC tune file, T1, on my website. It's tune T067 at the end. www.erols.com/olsonw

Philippa: oops. When I double-checked, chorus lyric were "Tow-Row," not row tow. The verse starts "I went down to Dublin..." so it looks like same song. Just a guess, but "ows" of around and routed from version you cited may have gotten crunched down into nonsense words by later singers. Anyway, found it on "High Hills and Mountains" album by Jean Ritchie, who credits it to Elizabeth Cronin in County Cork. Not to creep off thread, but thanks for your posting elsewhere of the Melungeon article.

"The Wind that Shakes the Barley" is quite a popular tune here in the New York scene. You can find it in O'Neill's MUSIC OF IRELAND. I have also heard the "little pack of tailors" on an album called "Celtic Mouth Music" put out by ellipsis arts. It sounds to me mostly like lilting the reel. The words are either in Irish or just nonsense. The notes credit Elizabeth Cronin and read as follows.

'Jean Ritchie and George Pickow collected this and some 50 other tunes by Cork singer Bess Cronin...The recordings had considerable impact -- Cronin's quiet style inspired many revival singers, and "The Little Pack of Tailors", which is sometimes deployed as a 'dandling' song by Irish mothers to bounce babies, has since been performed by many artists, including Len Graham. Cronin died in 1956.'

I hope this information is of help to you.

Hey Markf & Philippa - I searched for Dublin tailors and can't find the song in the database. Have you got a full set of lyrics you can post for us?

From: Philippa

Well, Joe, there's not much to this ditty, though there may be a story behind it:

As I was going to Dublin, I met a little tailor
I put him in my pocket for fear the dogs would chase him
The dogs began to bark at him and I began to beat ['bate'] him
I threw him in the water for fear the dogs would eat ['ate'] him

All around we routed them and all around we chased them,
All around we routed them, the little pack of tailors
And All around we routed them and all around we chased them,
All around we routed them, the little pack of tailors.
