Origins: Following The Drum

I was watching the tv show "Harlots", and someone sang the song "Following the Drum".

(Once I slept in a feather bed with blankets woven warm/woolen blankets warm, etc.)

Anyone know where I can find a recording or anything? I'm getting only one site with lyrics when I google. Can't find any info about the song either. Is it traditional? Is it British? It's a lovely song, why can't I find anything about it??

I found the lyrics here: http://sallyodgers.50megs.com/lalsdrum.htm. I'm guessing that it's not a traditional song, but I have no clue as to the origins of the song.
I did find a script for Episode 1 of Harlots that makes mention of an excerpt of the song: -Joe-

FOLLOWING THE DRUM
(songwriter???)

Oh, once I slept in a feather bed
With woolen blankets warm
Now I'm glad to lay my head
On a cloak that's old and torn
Oh, sing with me a merry catch
As summer days will come
My love he is a soldier boy
And so I'm following the drum.

With a patter patter tat
And a rattle and a scrap
And the beat of the marching song
I'm ragged and worn
And my hose are torn-
Yet I am following along.

Oh once I ate from a silver plate
With sauces rich and rare
Now I'm glad if I'm not too late
To find some bread to share
Oh sup with me on a scraggy fowl
And dream of sugar plums
My love he is a soldier boy
And so I'm following the drum.

With a patter patter tat
And a rattle and a scrap
And the beat of the marching song
I'm ragged and worn
And my hose are torn-
Yet I am following along.

Oh once I wore a silken shawl
And a bonnet of ribbon trim
Now I'm glad if I'm clad at all
'Twixt my ankles and my chin.
Oh sew with me in a sturdy stitch
And do not prick your thumb
My love he is a soldier boy
And so I'm following the drum.

With a patter patter tat
And a rattle and a scrap
And the beat of the marching song
I'm lame and tired before my time
But still I follow him along.

Oh, I'm lame and tired but I still smile-
And still I follow him along.

Hi Joe-
Thank you, yes, that is the webpage that I mentioned as being the only place I could find reference to the song. The site lists a bunch of other songs, and this is what is written as an intro to the song list:

"Long Ago Love Songs is a collection of love songs and dancing songs from the past. They are all set in the British Isles, and the periods range from mediaeval to 19th Century. "

I can't find any contact info for the writer of the page, to check with them about where they found the song. But they seem to be saying that it is traditional.

And yes, that's the episode of the show that I watched. I can watch the episode anytime I want on Hulu, so I can hear the song again. I was just hoping that there was an actual recording or something of the whole song that I could access. There is not even a soundtrack from the show available (maybe there will be eventually...it is a new show).

Hi, Alex -

Since we're originally/primarily a lyrics site, I try my best to make sure that lyrics are posted for every song we discuss. That's how we've accumulated all the songs we have after these 20 years.

I found an email address for the owner of the blog where we found the lyrics. I sent her an email this morning. Let's see what she says.

If you have access to the show and can watch it again, check the end of the movie for song credits, and let us know what it says.

All the best to you.

Gotcha, thanks. I had initially looked for her email address, and didn't see anything on the site, but have now found it! Can't believe I missed that.

No note of it in the show credits (that I could find). Other than "Music By", which is listed as a Rael Jones, whom I have emailed, but don't have much hope of hearing back from. I will certainly update if I do.

I also checked the show's IMDB page, as well as the specific episode's page, and haven't been able to find anything there. The song is sung by one of the regular characters, so I looked up that actress's IMDB page as well, and found nothing.

I have also messaged the "Harlots" Facebook page, in case there's any help to be found there.

Rael Jones Hi Betsy, glad you like the show! We're working on a soundtrack release at the moment, it should be out in a few weeks, I'll announce on this page when it becomes available.

Guest, Can you send a Facebook message to Rael Jones and ask her about the song?

-Joe-

P.S. It helps if you use a consistent name when posting at Mudcat, even though we don't require it. People like to know who they're talking to. Just fill in the "from" box when you post.

Yes, sorry, I realized too late that I hadn't added my name to my last post. (the post above yours is not from me, I don't know who that's from)

I don't think messaging Jones will do much since we're not connected on Facebook, so the message will go to his "Message Requests" inbox, which is rarely seen. I did send an email via a "connect" option on his website.

I don't know where that conversation that Guest posted took place, as it's not on Jones' public Facebook wall. It must only be visible to his "friends".

The song is Following the Drum by Rael Jones. They just uploaded the whole Harlots soundtrack to Spotify. I'm sorry if I couldn't help any further.
