2017 FSGW Getaway coming soon!

08 May 17 - 05:17 PM (#3853985)
Subject: 2017 FSGW Getaway coming soon!
From: Nancy King

Heads up, folks! The 2017 FSGW Getaway weekend is coming soon! This year will be our 53rd annual weekend of fun and song, and we hope you'll join us! Kids are especially welcome.

NOTE THE DATE: Because of the convergence of Jewish holidays and camp availability, the Getaway will be earlier than in the past: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 to MONDAY SEPTEMBER 18. We'll be gathering at the same place we've been for the last 10 years or so -- West River Conference Center on an inlet of the Chesapeake Bay. It's a beautiful spot with level terrain, cabins with heat and AC, and lots of places to jam all day and all night. You can get more information about the Getaway by going to www.fsgw.org, and scrolling down to "Getaway" in the left-hand column. This has the information specific to last year's event, but of course this year's will be similar.

We have a great lineup of special guests this year: We're very excited that the folksinger's folksinger -- the incomparable BARRY O'NEILL -- will joining us this year. LARRY HANKS and DEBORAH ROBINS will be here with their extensive repertoire of traditional American music. Two of our favorite friends from the U.K. (and famous Mudcatters), CAROLE ETHERTON and ANDREW MCKAY, will bring lots of original and traditional songs. The wonderful trio from Maine, METEORA (WILL BROWN, KAT LOGAN, and JIM LONEY) are bound to please with their varied repertoire, great harmonies, and instrumental skill. DENNIS and JUDY COOK, Getaway regulars until they moved to Ohio, will be back with lots of ballads and other traditional songs. And last, but definitely not least, we welcome JULIE HENIGAN, who brings songs from many different genres, and loves for everyone to sing along! All of these folks will be performing in mini-concerts and participating in lots of workshops.

The Program Committee -- me, Carly Gewirz (Mudcatter "Carly") and longtime Getaway-goers Kathie Mack and Lisa Null -- are now in the process of putting together a list of possible workshops. We've thought of quite a few, as have our guests, and now we're ready for your ideas. One of the great things about the Getaway is that we really do try to tailor the program to the interests of those attending, but that's hard to do until we know who's coming and what they'd like to do. So: please tell us if you plan to come, and what you'd like to see on the program. Are there workshops you'd like to lead, co-lead, or attend? Workshops you'd like to see repeated (or not)? We're open to all suggestions, and although not all of them will end up on the final list (we have only 2 days, after all, so not everything can make the final cut), we do promise to consider all ideas. You can post them to this thread, or PM Carly or me.

The Getaway is all about participation, so start participating now!

Looking forward to seeing you all!

Nancy

CET and I don't know yet if we can come this year. We're moving from Ottawa to Stratford (Ontario) at the beginning of August, and we could be up to our necks in house problems in September. I hope there will still be room for us if/when we see our way clear.

I have a suggestion for a workshop. New England is famous for many things, not the least of which is Ghost stories. Of course, I have a few. A few years ago, I met one in person, and I enjoy telling the tale. There are songs, such as "Unfortunate Miss Baily" as well as well known narrations. I have a book of spook stories titled "Haunted New England."
Anyone interested?

I hope all you folks are making your plans for coming to the Getaway! The Program Committee has been hard at work, and I think we can promise you a good time. We ALWAYS manage to have a good time, come to think of it.

One of the things we've enjoyed in recent years is having a campfire by the shore on Saturday night after the concert. We'd like to continue that tradition, but we need somebody to take charge of getting it started (both the fire and the singing...) and seeing to it that the fire is properly doused by somebody when the singing is over. So far this year we haven't found that person, and we can't do the campfire without that person. Any volunteers??

Not entirely sure how much singing I'll actually do, since I expect I'll be spending a good portion of the daylight hours chasing a toddler all over the camp. We'll see how much energy I have left for the night.

It's looking like I may be able to come this year & need the chance to be among singers something fierce after having Fox Valley Festival flooded out. The Cooks have been keeping me in practice of singing & tune playing with others, but there are a whole bunch of you I am so looking forward to hearing.

Joe Offer, any chance you're driving the Northern route through Cleveland? I can promise a cathedral tour!

Hurrah!

Of note, it appears from the schedule that music after hours in the Peace Lodge this year is off limits.

Probably a good idea to circulate that info widely BEFORE the Getaway to ensure there is 'peace in the valley.'

Suggest that some one from FSGW also post it on the Facebook Mudcat group. There will still be people who won't see the schedule until they check in, but the more people who are aware of that in advance, the better.

I understand the change re: "noise at night" for Peace cabin - , but I would pay EXTRA to have a 'noisy cabin'......I really love having a small venue 15 feet from my bed. The nature center has horrible acoustics and the other two are just too large...(for me) but the big thing is that they are too far from where I sleep!

From: Nancy King

Not sure where you guys got the idea there would be no late-night music! We are fervently hoping (and planning) for an all-night music cabin in Peace, as of old. The only potential fly in that ointment would be if we don't have enough folks sign up to bunk there. We've even left Peace Cabin free of workshops until after lunch each day, so late-night revelers can sleep in!

So, if you registered without knowing this, and didn't ask for "Music All Night" (which is definitely an option on the registration form), AND you would like to bunk in there, please contact one of us (preferably Dean Clamons, whose contact info is on the reg. form) and let us know. We want to have all-night music in Peace!

Nancy

VERY good to know - but I have to admit I did NOT see "music all night" as an option on the registration form.

But since I have had the same room for years and years I suspect I will be there anyway.

Joe Offer has arrived, and Ernie Johnson will be landing this afternoon. Bobert has likewise threatened to roll into town for a brief visit. This is historic! Or perhaps hysteric. Anyway, interesting times! The Getaway Convoy forms up Friday morning and rolls north!

I am delighted to be going this year. In the past, It seems I've only met, talked with, or heard sing, a fraction of the Mudcat folks attending whose posts I enjoy here. Those I have met, I hope to see again. A few I've known from before joining Mudcat, but so many more are screen names, without knowledge of what their name tag will read.

I hope new faces will make themselves known. I will be the large, limping, long-haired lady who tends to wear bright colors: lots of turquoise and magenta. I come equipped with an Autoharp & Anglo concertina with DeKalb stickers on the cases. Judy & Dennis Cook can pick me out of a lineup.

My name is Joanne, coming from Cleveland.

CAMSCO will bring the last few sets of This is Us, the second set of mudcat CDS and a few single CDS from that set. Cheap. We don't want to bring them home. $5 a set of 5 CDs of $1 for the stray singles CDs. There are four sets. Anyone want to reserve one? Post here. No other CDs, all books. Unless people want some of the leftover Danny Spooner CDs which Dick produced for Danny whenever he was touring the US.

Yes, the festivities began in North Carolina Tuesday with an open Mike night at a local Tavern. Dani and Janie made 2 kinds of chili for a Wednesday singaround at Amos's beautiful house, and BOBERT was there with his cigar box Stratocaster resonator guitar. Abby Sale stunned us with a performance of "The Harlot of Jerusalem."
It's nice to be here.
