BS: A murrain on all online newspapers!

From time to time, I check a news link or a link to an item of interest in an online newspaper - and end up cursing the damned thing.

You clink the link and get to the page - and wait while the whole page - videos, photos, adverts, links elsewhere - loads up. You start to read and get interrupted by a video starting up. You try and scroll down and have to wait while more bullshit rolls out. If you're lucky, you get to read the whole article - but, by then, you don't care.

I realise that I'm getting the content for free and that the newspaper has to get money from somewhere, but I'm driven to the conclusion that the trade-off isn't worth it.

Long live paper!

It only gets worse if you use the internet to get purchasing advice of any kind.

I totally agree Will. The page jiggles about then sticks, and while one is trying to scroll down in order to continue to read, it whizzes back to the start.
They also have a pop up thing inviting one to subscribe. I'd rather eat broken glass.

Maybe you should try clicking instead of clinking, Will.☺️
When I find a troublesome page I copy it and paste it to notepad. It's easy to do and works most of the time.

Will,

All these irritations are easily turned off though. A combination of browser settings, an Ad Blocker and a hosts file work for me.

If I recall correctly you use a Mac but I'm sure there are equivalents there.

I'm sure you're right - I use these things so infrequently that I forget.

google search for mac ad blocker

The ad blocker comes with a browser. I use Firefox with my mac & their ad blocker is excellent.

I find a lot of ads miss the boat - they're for stuff I've already gone and bought!
