Arena I should have said! BBC4 Sunday nights, interesting programme on early recordings. Last night (Ep3 had cajun music and Miss.John Hurt. Clips too short of course. Next week June 11 2017 Final Ep.4 will feature modern musicians playing same tunes on same vintage equipment with inevitable CD to follow.

Could have done with a full programme on each of the three subjects in last night's show.

I'm loving this series. Wasn't Mississippi John Hurt an absolutely delightful man? He virtually vanished, until many years later he was rediscovered, by a fan listening to a record mentioning his home town. He just seemed to radiate goodness somehow.
I agree, we need an entire programme on each genre and artist.

BBC iPlayer - American Epic EP3

It's raining, so I may be watching it right now.

Can't wait for the next one. Narrated by Robert Redford (yup that one)

The list of artists I recognise on EP4 blow yer mind.

Sorry I must have missed the earlier thread, perhaps a Mudelf will combine them.

They showed a clip from the 'modern musicians playing same tunes on same vintage equipment' from the next episode, Roger. Elton John seemed to be one. In my humble opinion it was ghastly.
I wish I'd met Mississippi John Hurt. He was absolutely adorable.

I find it sad how many of the rediscovered blues men in the 1960s no longer had a guitar, presumably sold because they needed the cash when money was short.
I agree the originals are best but it might be interesting to see how modern musicians cope with primitive equipment. Elton not one of my faves (but I enjoyed Crocodile Rock).
