Song Circles in Portland, OR.

From: Bryant

Hi All,

My name's Bryant and I've posted a few times over the past 9 months or so. I just moved up to Portland from Albuquerque and finally managed to rent an apartment and get my life into some semblance of order.

Much as I like playing songs alone in my living room, I'm craving a little musical camaradarie and wondering if the are some M'catters in the Portland area who could suggest a song circle or maybe a bar or club that has an informal open session. I'm a solidly mediocre acoustic guitarist and can sing pretty well on a good night. My 'folk' music leanings are toward American country/blues stuff, both traditional, old time and the usual 60s early 70s Dylan, Grateful Dead, Neil Young kinds of things. (I'm not well-versed in Celtic or Irish music.)

Any suggestions are welcome. Of course, I'm not looking for too much detail on the internet -- but a chance to meet a few of you at a bar and exchange phone #s would be excellent.

(By the way -- I don't have a computer of my own so I'll have to check replies after my shift at work is over. So if I don't respond right away it doesn't mean I'm aloof -- it means I'm at home -- practicing.) :)

Long Live the Mudcat.

Bryant

Here's a good place to start, Bryant. Here's a blue clicky thing to the Portland Folklore Society
I live about 50 miles outside of Portland, and make the occasional song circle. Margo might know more.
Blessings,
Barbara

Bryant, Margarita is now Margo! I am in Vancouver Washington, just across the river from Portland. I like to go to Monday night song circle at Kit's house. I was going to give you a blue clicky for Portland Folklore Society (PFS), but Barbara beat me to it! The info for song circle is at the PFS site. I hope I see you there!

Bryant, you're in a good place. My involvement with folk music got a big boost when I moved to Portland from Philadelphia in 1982, and started going to song circles. I later moved to Seattle and now am in Hawaii, but I treasure my experiences at the East Ave. Tavern and the Horse Brass Pub, and the song circles at David's house near Lloyd Center. I just clicked on Barbara's link to the PFS site, and found some old familiar names. I'm going to try to make it to Singtime Frolics in March, which should be wonderful. I'll look for you there. Welcome to Portland!

Aloha,
Mark

And, Mark, Harmony (SFFMC NYs) is open to folks on a drop-in basis this year (on account of Y2K attrition). Send me a personal message here if you want more info... just incase you're getting homesick for some NW weather...
Blessings,
Barbara

Hey Bryant, what kinda work were you able to muster up in Portland to justify your move ??

I'm yet another Californian lusting northerly, but need to secure something b4 breaking at the roots.

Obviously, Portland's extraordinary folk scene is a major draw !! Hope you find it !!
