I came across this wonderful song on a friends vinyl compilation album - 35 years ago. I have the tune in my head but can't remember all the lyrics.

I can't find a recording for sale anywhere>

Has any one got the lyrics who could paste them here or know where I could purchase a download or an album?

Through years of Irish History
You've died and you've been named

He will be greatly missed. Commiserations to all of his close friends and loved ones. Perhaps the heading should include 'obit'.

Ignore last posting. There is already an obit thread.

Many of his songs that have never been put on record. I've never heard this one. Have you got any more of of it? It occurs it might have gone under a different name.

It's the last track on his 1972 Trailer album The Valley of Tees.

Oh Mr Gunman I am saddened when I hear what you have done,
and what you'll do tomorrow to another mothers son,
Oh your counterparts in office are as guilty as the gun,
to a thousand women weeping, who claim the basil one.

(there are more verses. Not sure about the last line. This was a refrain I think.)

I just found a reference to a book which has the text of Vin Garbutt's The Gunman.

Title         The Oxford book of English traditional verse / chosen and edited by Frederick Woods, Published Oxford ; New York : Oxford University Press, 1983

The book is in an Australian university library collection but I'm sure other libraries would have a copy.

Also I did a Google search on the search terms:

Garbutt "Mr Gunman"

and there are a few vinyl records available for sale.

I had the pleasure of seeing Vin Garbutt perform at a small concert in a pub in Newcastle NSW Australia many decades ago. He was amazingly brilliant.

That last line of the refrain goes, "To a thousand women weeping, who'll claim the battle won?"

I think.
