He shaped our teens...

we gorged on movies...

One of by all-time broadcasters ever
The BBC naused up the programme when they put Jonathon the Tosser in charge
I was at the the premier of The Killing Fields at the NFT when Norman, along with others, contributed - an unforgettable night.
First Puttnam spoke, then Roland Joffe, then the main actor and finally the man the film was based on, Dith Pran -
We all left bumping into the walls - completely drained
I love good films and even indifferent ones give me a buzz!!

RIP Mr. Norman and thank you for that great theme music. "I wish I knew how it would feel to be free".

R.I.P. Barry Norman
A gentleman and a scholar (particularly with regard to films)

Softly spoken, erudite, sincere.

Once again:
R.I.P.

I still think with affection of Late Night Line-up, with Barry Norman and Melvin Bragg and Joan Bakewell, picking some programme that had been shown earlier to mull over. Anytime it was something I'd seen, I felt like I'd had a small win. Even if I disagreed with what they said about it. Of course that was when there were only a sensible number of channels, and more stuff worth warching on them. ("57 Channels (and Nothin' on" - only 57!!)

Johphon Woss was watchable if sycophantic. But now I haven't watched the current incumbent more than 20 seconds. As Bazza would say "Nah!".

Different era, different presentation.

the rumour about Joan Bakewell was that occasionally she wore a mini skirt and that on very rare occasions there was a distinct possibility of her flashing her knickers.

however not even that inducement could get me watching three idiots talking reverently about Tom Stoppard's latest load of bollocks.

the world was full of real live knicker flashers in those days.
