03 Aug 17 - 11:44 PM (#3869812) Subject: Folklore: Shakespeare as addressed by Gloriana From: EBarnacle Over the years, there has been a lot of discussion over whether Shakespeare wrote Shakespeare. A friend has advised me that a local museum library has several letters written by Elizabeth to Shakespeare. I intend to go there in a few days to see whether the letters are available for scholarly viewing, nay whether they even exist. It would be good to lay the conundrum of authorship to rest. An academic friend of mine has offered to work up a journal article with me if the letters are real. |

The Elizabeth letter dates from when WS was 12 years old. There are other contemporary letters in the archive which I have offered to help conserve. At first glance none of them mention WS. Jack, I wrote about Falstaff, not Macbeth. The religious and political situation in Merrye Olde was such that there was massive Catholic subversion as well as several attempts to overthrow Elizabeth. It was not a pleasant time to be a dissenter. |
