seek song: What Lies Between Your Legs

OK. so this is serious. I seek a song, or theek a thong, or something like that. I know it's been discussed here, but I can't find it.
It tells the story of maiden who is accosted by a highwayman on horseback. It appears that she is about to succumb to his requirements, but first she asks a favor. The highwayman agrees, and she says, I wish to have what lies between your legs. Vainly thinking she seeks his "manhood," the highwayman dismounts the horse and prepares to mount the maiden. But the maiden mounts the horse and rides away, happy to have what had been "between his legs."
Now, I know we all have heard this song, but what's its name and where were the lyrics posted?
I searched "between your legs" and "between thy legs," but to no avail.
Thanks.

I found it, but I had to use Google because I couldn't figure out how to find it with our own search engines.
But I'll leave this thread open and see who else can find it.

See the thread Help: Horse Thief / Crafty Maid's Policy.

Cara wrote their own version on this theme as The King and the Fair Maid.

It's definitely 'The Crafty Maid's Policy
I can't get any of the versions on Reinhard's links to play but I've heard both Frankie Armstrong and Peggy Seeger sing it
I think I might have a recording of it somewhere if you want it Joe

Don't think so Chris
Similar but certainly not as specific or erotic

Yes, "Lovely Joan" is similar, but no cigar. "Sweet Joan" in the DT crosslink above, is the same song as "Crafty Maid's Policy."
Thanks for all the interesting answers.

I know the Frankie Armstrong version, which I think is about perfect. Jim, if you have another version you think I might like, feel free to send it. Thanks, everyone.

I have a broadside on my other computer. It was on the Bodleian
Library site. I'll dig it out if I can remember. The version I have it was a bunch of Toffs rather than a highwayman. I wrote my own tune for it.

Here you are.

The Crafty Maid
19th Cent. Broadside

Come all you lads and lasses, and listen here awhile
I'll sing to you a merry song I think will make you smile
'Tis of a farmer's daughter the truth I will declare
She was riding to the market to sell her country ware.

She'd butter and good cheese, sir, beside some new laid eggs
Two conies in her basket and one between her legs
To market she was tripping with a coney near each thigh
It lay so warm she thought no harm, two lords came riding by.

Now these lords being wanton blades they liked this damsel well
One of them riding up to her said what have you to sell?
I have butter and good cheese, sir, besides some new laid eggs
He said my dear what shall I give for that between your legs

She smiled unto herself to think what she had there
She said kind sir, you will not buy the price it is too dear
For the colour of it's brown and the price is fifty pounds
He said my dear, the money's here, let's ride to yonder town

She said to sell my other wares, to market I must go
He said, my dear never mind, I'll buy that ware also
And as for those two conies upon them we will dine
And you shall be merry with drinking ale and wine.

The bargain it was bound and he paid the money down
Her coney be it wild or tame, she pulled up her cloak and gown.
Between her thighs so white, he thought to have delight
But she pulled out a rabbit which did them all afright.

The gentlemen did shout and laugh until the house did ring
And the young lord did curse and swore he'd have his cash again.
But witnesses declared he bought the bargain fair
So to the justice he did go to try the matter there.

How came you by this coney? the justice he did say.
Between your legs, the meaning now let me know I pray.
'Twas a present for a friend, and lest it should take harm
I put it between my legs that I might keep it warm.

The bargain it was fair these young men witness be
The justice said the bargain's fair as ever I did see
But the young lord did say sir the thing cannot be right
For I did mean the other thing, to lay with her all night

What mean you by the other thing? the justice he did say.
You fairly bought her coney and that you can't deny
The lass has played a cunning part, commended ought to be
So you may take your coney home and have it for your tea.

Will see if I can find Peggy's tomorrow Joe
I may be wrong, but I seem to remember we have a Rounder album of bawdy American songs from field singers with a traditional version on it.
Will look that up too

I was looking back at your OP, Joe and I think you may have been after "The Highwayman Outwitted" though the two may have been conflated at some point. I have two versions in broadsides that I found in the Bodleian and this one which a note I have put at the bottom says "Noted by Frank Kidson from Mrs. Kate Thompson of Knaresborough, Yorkshire."

The Highwayman Outwitted
Traditional

It's of a rich farmer in Cheshire,
To the market his daughter would go,
Not thinking that any would harm her,
She'd often been that way before.

She was met by a rusty highwayman,
Who caused the young damsel to stand.
"Your money and clothes now deliver
Or else your sweet life is at hand."

He stripped this fair damsel stark naked,
And gave her his bridle to hold,
And there she stood shivering and shaking,
Near starved unto death with the cold.

She put her left foot in the stirrup,
And mounted his horse like a man;
Over hedges and ditches she galloped,
Crying, "Catch me, bold rogue, if you can."

She rode over hedges and ditches
And places she knew very well
She left him with a parcel of farthings
The sum of five shillings to tell

The bold rogue he soon followed after,
Which caused him to puff and to blow.
But the highwayman never could catch her,
Till she came to her own father's door.

"Oh daughter! dear daughter! what's happened?"
"Oh father! to you I will tell;
I was met by a rusty highwayman,
Thank God! I am here and I'm well."

"Put the grey mare in the stable,
And spread a white sheet on the ground."
They searched the highwayman's portmanteau,
And counted out five thousand pounds.

Dear daughter this is a good portion
And I will give you five hundred more
I think that will be a good portion
To keep the old wolf from the door.

I think the "five thousand" in the next to last verse should have been "five hundred". Probably a transcription error on my part. After all the last verse is suggesting the father will match what the daughter has acquired.

"The Highwayman Outwitted"
Again not the case Tootlet
The Highwayman Outwitted is another 'biter-bit ballad and is in fact a Child Ballad 'The Crafty Farmer' (Child 283)
In most versions of this the victim of the highwayman is a man - usually a farmer on his way to pay his rent
There is another broadside entitled 'The Female Frolic' where a woman goes out dressed in men's clothes to try out her hand as a highwayman - after several successful attempts she tries to rob a highwayman but is overpowered and, when searched, is found to be a woman
The would-be victim then proceeds to "show her his way with a maid"
Again , different song
I'm pretty sure the one Joe is looking for is unique
I assume you've tried Vance Randolph's/Gershon Legman's 'Blow the Candle Out' Joe - if it's anywhere, that's the first place to look
Will try that one in the morning

The song my friend was looking for, was "The Crafty Maid." The song that first came to my mind was "The Highwayman Outwitted," but I didn't know the name of "outwitted," so I'm glad Tootler posted it.

Seeing this variety of songs, is even better than getting just one right answer.

In my head, I hear Claudia Schmidt's voice singing this acapella when I think of this song, though I could swear it was on a Sally Rogers album, but it's so long ago, I'd have to dig through stores vinyl and cassette to be sure, but "Crafty Maid's Policy" is how I remember it as well.

I keep being reminded of the old story of the conductor who shouted at the cellist, "Sir/Madam, between your legs you have an instrument that is capable of giving pleasure to thousands, and all you can do is scratch it".

a bit tedious. a charitable titter possibly. more likely people will be impatient for you to get to the end of it.
