Don't forget the wall is still in play. Great ideas were discussed over dinner about taking all the debris from Texas and Florida and using it to pile a wall high and wide. Every manner of toxic waste and sanitation by products could be transported from all across this great nation to build the most powerful deadly wall ever made.

From: Nigel Parsons

"Less or fewer".
A tricky one that. 'Fewer' refers to a smaller number, 'less' to a smaller amount.
Some will try to clarify it as whether it relates to a number (in which case it's fewer). But this falls apart with sentences like "I have less/fewer than ten pounds", where, even ignoring the fact that 'pounds' can also relate to weight, both words may be accurate.
If I pull a handful of coins from my pocket, I may be checking the value I hold, and could say "I have less than ten pounds."
Alternately:
If I pull a handful of coins from my pocket, I may be checking whether I have enough coins for the meter (or for the pinball machine), and could say "I have fewer than ten pounds."

As with many of these linguistic problems it often helps to find alternate wording, either as a replacement, or to clarify the meaning.
In the two examples above I could have said (respectively):
"I have not as much as ten pounds"
or:
"I have not as many as ten pounds"

So the way I remember is that if I could replace it with 'not as much' I say 'less'. If I could replace it with 'not as many' I say 'fewer'.

Cheers
Nigel

Retirement - languishing due to lack of funding.

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/worlds-largest-radio-telescope-faces-retirement/

With the NSF's budget essentially flat since 2010, the agency cannot afford to run all its telescopes indefinitely, continue building new ones and still pay the country's scientists. But researchers who use Arecibo argue that it has a useful life of novel discoveries ahead of it, even if is not as shiny as the newcomers, especially in some areas where it makes a unique contribution.

Don't you think knowing the education level of an individual and their technical language makes communication more effective?

Otherwise things get dumbed down for a broader audience and one gets swiped in the face for dumbing down.

Being as fallible as I am, (I find names and identities challenging) it is a solvable conundrum. I have a BA and an incomplete patchwork quilt of an MA.

Acme - 20 Sep 17 - 09:21 PM

"It looks like the sciences have been underfunded for all of this decade, and it isn't going to improve during this administration. Trump is determined to knock us back into the stone age."

As one high up in the list of problem posters on this forum according to Joe Offer I read the above and the following question immediately came to mind. Why does Acme mention actual underfunding for a decade and omits to name the President responsible for that underfunding (Barak Obama), but does name the current President (Donald Trump) to blame him for any continued underfunding that has not yet happened?

This will now be the third time I have posted this question, which I think is a perfectly reasonable question, given what was written in a section of a forum that describes itself as "BS/General Discussion Threads". The previous two postings resulted in the question being deleted. My question above asks for an explanation of something that appears to be biased and irrational, the question is not couched in terms that could be described in any way as "unkind, impolite, argumentative or snooty." I suppose whether this stands or not is a measure in the actual belief in the right of freedom of speech.

I am sure Acme is is perfectly capable of responding herself, tezzer, but the her statement

"It looks like the sciences have been underfunded for all of this decade, and it isn't going to improve during this administration." is a truism that cannot be disputed.

If it is the line "Trump is determined to knock us back into the stone age." then that is simply her opinion and, as we have often said before, everyone is entitled to their opinions. If you believe that Trump is doing a good job then you are entitled to that opinion as well but you may find yourself in a dwindling minority.

So, just what is so biased and irrational about her statement that gets you heated up enough to demand some sort of explanation? Neither you nor anyone else on here is in a position to demand anything. As I have commented before, you just seem to want to fight and it is your attitude that gets posts deleted and threads closed. Not content.
