I've had a major domestic since I failed to include my Martin D28.. she's had the major sulks ever since There's a couple of "endearments" that have raised my eyebrows.. the ELO Mbo?? .. I won't say I didn't like then.. indeed some of their tracks got the old foot taping, I'm just wondering why they are a "Love of your life".. now don't get me wrong, I never condemn anyone for their musical tastes.. heck mine are diverse enough as it is.. unless of course they like the Clancy Bros or the Spinners (here I'm ducking to avoid low flying household objects).. I can't even begin to list my loves in the world of blues cos it just about encompases everyone, though Robert Johnson must be up towards the top along with Elmore James and Sonny Boy Williamson Áine you have aroused my curiosity as I've never heard of most if not all the Irish artists you mentioned.. yeah okay I'm English and know diddly squat.. First, let me say that I never experienced ELO firsthand. I was born in 1978, the hight of their career, and was only 7 when they broke up in '86. I heard one of their songs on a Classic Rock station (I had only been listening to rock musiv for less than a year then) and later bought one of their records at an "antique" shop for $2.50. I became hooked by their catchy sounds, great lyrics, and their quasi-classical stylings (I like classical music very much). Most impressive is Jeff Lynne, who was the lead singer, songwriter, and producer--he has such a hold on creating good music--there's not one song he wrote that I don't like. After the band broke up, he went on to produce his idols, the members of the Beatles in their solo endeavors, including George Harrison's "Cloud Nine," Ringo Starr's "Time Takes Time," and most recently, Paul McCartney's "Flaming Pie," as well as all the great Beatles "lost songs" like "Free As A Bird." Well anyway, here I am 3 years later and own all but 4 of their albums (soon to be 3...) I am very influenced by their music, and you can detect hints of it in my ELO/Celtic mix, because of them I love cellos, and I even can imitate Jeff's voice. All in all, I must say that they're my favorite band in the world, and their music is (well, almost) the best music of all! THAT'S WHO I LOVE! --Mbo (BTW my song "What Did I Do" is highly influenced by them, and incidentally, is my most popularly requested song!) |

I'm Mick Lowe and want everyone on the mudcat/web to know it.. As for ELO I admire all you say about them, especially Jeff Lynne. I must admit my view of them is slightly different as I have traced the career of Roy Wood from the Move.. through Wizzard and into the ELO and having seen Roy Wood several times in whatever guise, have always been struck with the impression that he has sought out the world of music as a profession rather than through love.. I can't help get the feeling that the output of whatever group he has been involved with, is more contrived to make money rather than being an artistic stand. That's not in any way an attempt to ignore any "& advances/ground breaking/etc.. that Roy Woods has done in the world of pop music.. I think Wizzard were the first group to use cellos.. no doubt I'll be corrected if wrong. The richness of the oceans and seas, now draining away. The possibility of finding a part of the world unsaturated with the presence of mankind. But I enjoyed it. Now as far as cartoon characters go, Bugs is my all time favourite. I loved his attitude. Warner Brothers were certainly the masters of cartoons. I will admit that some of today's animated shows are growing on me...Rugrats...Simpsons (though I never have the time to watch them...and am usually outvoted)...then there are lots of Children's storybooks now animated that I like: Little Bear; Franklin; Kipper (though I am partial to Tiger).... and to get on the music topic again: I didn't mention either...The Andrews Sisters, or Perry Como....heck, I love the Big Band era and Balladeers of yesteryear! Thomas the Tank Engine was narrated by Ringo Starr, right? Sideshow Bob was done by Kelsey Grammer, and Bugs, Daffy, and Tweety were all done by Mel Blanc. I know Wallace is done by a well-known British actor, but I can't remember his name, he used to be on this show... Does anyone remember "Toxy and The Toxic Crusaders"? "Toxic Crusaders--they're gross--but they still get the girls." I never watched that one. It looked stoopid. How about "Mr.Bogus"? he was pretty cool. As for Itchy and Scratchy, there was an episode where they tried to ad a third charactor and Homer met the voice of itchy and scratchy. Mick, is the charactor in that episode the same (or based on) the person who really does their voices? As for Side Show Bob, I know Phil Hartman did a lot of classic Simpsons charactors (like Linol Hutts and more). If I had to guess, Phil would be my answer. Would I be right Mick? Hong Kong Phooey, Jabber Jaws, and Josie and the pussy cats. What can i say, they were on on Saturday morning when I got up before the rest of the family. I never liked Scooby doo, but my 5 year old daughter loves him now from the cartoon network, I still don't. Also the Rugrats is funny and we both enjoy it. She loves CATDOG and I hate it. Disney movies will always be great movies to me, but then I grew up with 70's cartoons, so what do you expect. As for who I love. In descending order, my partner Andy, my daughter Drew, my parents, my psuedo daughter Sarah, my music and all the friends that have brought the music to me and enabled me to play with them. I was a fan of old time and folk music for about five years before I decided I wanted to play it.The encouragement and support from all the other musicians when I started was wonderful. The community that we have become a part of in the Florida Folk Music scene is extra special. At the festivals, there is a sense of a small town community. It's like a family reunion of what your family would be if you could hand pick them. My hand picked family includes JU, Wanda, Billy, and Andy. The music we make together exceed anything we could do separately. When together, there is nothing better. I just hope we can play again together real soon. Our lives have been a very real study in constrasts this year. Making a CD, playing at more festivals than ever, getting a Grammy nomination, losing parents, dealing with life threatening cancer, spending lots of quality time with people we love and respect. Through all this, the bottom line is I love life and all the challenges it gives us, and if it don't kill ya, it will only make you stronger. To life strength, faith and love, Kristi

As far as Yakima goes, Former Yakimite is right, it's pretty much the armpit of the Northwest. But, as in all things in life, you have to do with it what you can. We have a SMALL folk community, some concerts, and a yearly festival, but other than that, you've got to travel for anything worthwhile. Darlin' Em, you probably should have seen Heidi Muller. She's definately worth it. All of her stuff is available on Folk Legacy Records. She does a lot of good music, as well as workshops, and teaching mountain dulcimer. Her "Good Road" is the theme song for our local folk radio show. I can't recommend any one album. She's a good writer, and she writes to suit her voice. She writes a lot of homegrown stuff. Her best writing, in my humble opinion is her "Average Woman". I also love "Casseopeia" (it's the best song ever written about the god-awful drive on Hwy26 to Othello) Other good ones are ones she does with Dan Maher(another cutie). "Long Way to Another Friend" and "Don't Let Me Come Home a Stranger" spring to mind. If you have Dan's "Winter Whisky" album, she's singing with him on "One More Time".
