Tech: iPad substitutes ? for ?

I occasionally use my iPad to post here, and I have noticed (I?ve noticed) that my apostrophes get turned into question marks when the post turns up in the thread. Other Catters appear to get the same result.

Is there any technical thing I can do remedy this - or is it a Mudcat matter?

Settings, general, keyboard, then turn off smart punctuation.

It was your one of your posts I was quoting here and later in that thread.

In another thread today I copied and pasted text from a Guardian article, and those blasted question marks turned up again. But this time, unlike before I'd turned off smart punctuation, I was able to edit them out successfully so that they didn't appear in the post.

Is this resulting from updating to iOS 11.0.3? I've held back from updating because of reported issues with the update and 'Onsong', and things "seem" still OK for me.

Thanks, Steve - now I'll check...

Well the smart punctuation wasn't in the older OS so I'm assuming that was the cause of the trouble. So far, I've had the problem on Mudcat only. Doesn't affect my typed emails, for example.

Of course its a Mudcat matter, it is the duty of webmasters to jump through any hoop that Apple shows them.

Microsoft Word uses "smart punctuation" that is a pain in the backside for people dropping documents into other software, such as from Word into InDesign (used to be PageMaker) from Adobe. I drop out all of Word's "smart" things like curly quotes, fake ellipsis, the fractions that were automatically reduced to small text, their m- or n-dash, etc. Then I save a file as rich text and that is what is loaded to InDesign. In Microsoft computers "Wordpad" is an RTF program. If you see a rich text mode instead of the fancy default mode and you should be okay. Assuming there are similar programs in the Mac world.

It is a feature that makes a lot of sense, but only works within "modern" environments that can deal with Unicode. Most websites fulfill this requirement, but Mudcat is a charming relic from a different era. Our attempts to teleport it into the present time have failed. See all those threads about codepages etc.

Actme: as for InDesign, I just read "It was the first DTP application to support Unicode for text processing". My guess is that in its "Settings" or "Options" there is a little option list for "Codepage" - switch it to "Unicode".

The way to make MS Word play nice with diacriticals and unusual characters is to convert the document to Unicode, then to save it back to the font you were using - the odd stuff stays unicode while everything else goes to the new font. THEN you can place that RTF file into InDesign.
