09 Dec 17 - 11:31 PM (#3893104)
Subject: Lyr Req: Glasgae ' Eskimos
From: GUEST,Dave Hunt

Another reqest from the same time (see request for Boomerang)

From the CND group called the Glasgae Eskimos, who used kayaks to get into (US)Naval Bases(eg Loch Long,) and paint CND signs on the side of anchored warships.

Chorus
Hoorah, hoorah. we are the Eskimos
Hoorah, hoorah, the Glasgae Eskimos
We'll gaff that nyaff? called ?Lanon?
We'll spear him whaur he blows
For we are the Glasgae Eskimoes

tune - Marching Through Georgia

The Glasgow Eskimos
(T. S. Law / Morris Blythman / Jim McLean)

Chorus:
Hullo! Hullo! We are the Eskimos
Hullo! Hullo! The Glesca Eskimos
We'll gaff that nyaff ca'd Lanin
And we'll spear him whaur he blows
For we are the Glesca Eskimos

It's up the Clyde came Lanin, a super-duper Yank
He'll gae doon a damn sight quicker when we stap him doon the stank
Up tae the neck in sludge and sewage fairly stops your swank
For we are the Glesca Eskimos

Well it's in an' oot an' up an' doon an' on an' aff the piers
There's cooncillors, collaborators, pimps and profiteers
The hairies jouk the polis, and the polis jouk the queers
We are the Glesca Eskimos

There's dredgers and there's sludgie boats tae keep the river clean
You lift your hand an pu' the chain--ye ken fine what I mean
But why has the Holy Loch been left outside the scheme?
We are the Glesca Eskimos

We've been in mony's a rammy, boys, we've been in mony's a tear
We've sortit oot this kind afore, we'll sort them onywhere
So get yuir harpoons ready, they're comin' up for air
We are the Glesca Eskimos"

Note: Captain Lanin USN was the commander of the USS Proteus, the US Navy Depot Ship moored in the Holy Loch. When it first arrived the ship's entry into the Holy Loch was delayed by CND protesters in kayaks.

Hope that helps.

It also fits in nicely to the thread on censorship of folk music which is current.

Thought I'd better provide some explanation of Glesca linguistic terms for our American and English cousins, :0)

Gaff......Barbed hook for poaching fish.
Nyaff......Creep...person of no account...Usually prefixed by "Wee"
Stank......Drainage trap containing effluent.
Hairies.....Women of very low morals.
Jouk.......Dodge...hide from.
Rammy......Public altercation usually involving the use of weapons other than firearms.
Tear... Pronounced "Terr".....Having a good time...Usually associated with "Rammy"(see above)
Air....Pronounced "Err".... not easily located in 60's Glasgow.

Alastair McDonald did a great concert of the songs of Morris Blythman (Thurso Berwick) in Edinburgh last year during the Carrying Stream Festival.
Have also heard this and other such revolutionary stuff (The Bo'ness Rebels) from Ewan McVicar, who, I think, was there with the protesters back in the 60s. (right decade? - correct me if wrong!)

Jim McLean sometimes posts on Mudcat -- - an amazing songwriter!

If no-one else posts Boomerang I think I have the booklet somewhere to hand- am not a very organised person, so probably someone else will put on the words before I do!

thanks Gallus Moll...info above.
The booklet you mention...now, I seem to recollect that .. was it a CND publication or by others?..and what was it called?

Takes me back to the Aldermaston marches I was on.. and Committee of 100, and Action at RSGs. It all felt like we could do something practical.   And I made lots of friends over the years too
I actually learned a lot of songs in that period .. not all anti- nuclear but a lot of folksongs too - both British and American..
