From Wikipedia: "In medieval music, the Geisslerlieder, or Flagellant songs, were the songs of the wandering bands of flagellants, who overspread Europe during two periods of mass hysteria: the first during the middle of the 13th century, and the second during the Black Death in 1349. The music was simple, sung in the vernacular, often call-and-response, and closely related to folk song; indeed some of the flagellant songs survived into the 17th century as folk songs in Catholic parts of central Europe. Musically the Geisslerlied were related to the Laude spirituale: they were unaccompanied song, with instrumental accompaniment specifically forbidden." Thanks! |

There are a few recordings (including one from the 1960s which was one of the first early music recordings I ever heard, and probably the worst). |

Maybe there is a recording, seeing as how this was an illustrious ensemble: The Early Music Consort of London. David Morrow (sp?) was still alive, and leading the ensemble. The piece started with the words: "Gloria in cielo." |

I have a recording of just one in German sung by Hugues Cuenod, on an old LP of mediaeval German songs of all kinds. Specifically I'd be interested in hearing more German language Geisslerlieder, since many of them were collected at the time (1349 AD) by Hugo of Reutlingen (now in Baden-Wuerttemberg) - making him perhaps one of the earliest documenters of vernacular song! The late, great David Munrow is the Early Music Consort guy to whom you refer, keberoxu. Thanks for the lead! |

The 6 pieces given are: fol. 30v-31, Nu ist diu betfart so here (sacred song)) fol. 31-31v, Maria muoter, reinû maìt (sacred song)) fol. 32-34v, Maria, unser frowe Kyrie eleyson (sacred song)) fol. 34v-35, Nu tret herzuo der bössen welle (sacred song)) fol. 35v-36v, Nu hebent uf die uwern hend (sacred song)) fol. 36v, Vainent tögen mit den ougen (sacred song)) fol. 42v, Alleluia. Ave benedicta Maria (alleluia)) The ms has been referenced in the Digital MS Database, but no details there: DIAMM entry. There is a book at archive on the music: Die Lieder und Melodien der Geissler des Jahres 1349 nach der Aufzeichnung Hugo's von Reutlingen. I haven't looked for others. Some are on youtube: Maria unser frowe - really nice! Nu tret herzuo - can't tell if this is the correct song.
