Purely out of interest-who was posting 16 yr ago?

Subject: Purely out of interest

Is there anyone here (apart from Joe of course) who was posting threads etc some 16 years ago?

You betcha, Mick. Bill_D (Bill Day of Maryland) is first and foremost in my mind.
I was on vacation when Mudcat opened in October 1996, and didn't find Mudcat until January 1997. There were a few other people who posted in those first few months, who still post here.
Big Mick Lane was one, although his presence is diminished now. Same with Martin Ryan.
But if your perameter is 16 years ago in 2002, there are lots of people still here who were here then.

You've confused me now Joe.. I thought you were one of the founding fathers of this wonderful website. But I thank you for your help in getting me back into the community. Just wondering if the likes of Mick Brackn are still checking out the site.

Just wondering how many people still here remember "Prof's Pages"...

I know vanity on my part. But your comments are much appreciated.

I see that the first thread I put a tracer on was in January 1997, tho I didn’t post in it, so I’ve been around that long. I was first alerted to Mudcat while playing (harp) in a trad music session on the south coast of Ireland - I live here, tho I’m not Irish.

My first ever post here was on 3rd October 2000, when I requested lyrics for "Sam the Skull", of all things....and got them pretty quickly too!
It was a friend who was recording my son's (indie) band who suggested I try the site for folk song lyrics.

My first post was 5 January 1997, message #1116 in Mudcat history. I spent months looking for the Digital Tradition after it was dropped from its Xerox site. I've posted over 30,000 messages - I think there are many who have posted more.

It's interesting to look back at the first messages posted at Mudcat. For the first two weeks, Max was pretty-much alone in answering requests and questions, and then Dick Greenhaus took over. Bert and Susan Arnowitt were early contributors, and Susan of DT came on at Message #222. There's a "Peter," who might be Peter Timmerman; and an "Ed" who might be Ed Pellow. "Lindahl" comes in at Message 228, and "RS" was an early poster - haven't seen those names in years. Mary LaMarca first posted at Message 267, and continued posting until her death. Bob Schwarer was an early poster (#243), and he still posts occasionally. There were posts from somebody named "Bill," but I don't know what Bill that would be. Bill Day first posted 7 Nov 1996, post number 303 - he's been posting as Bill_D ever since. He's the first one outside the Max/Greenhaus/Susan/Bert consortium who's still posting regularly.

Here's the URL od the first post, which doesn't exist. The first post in existence is #4. Change that last "1" to a "4" and you can see it. Keep changing that last number to see other early posts. https://mudcat.org/Detail.CFM?messages__Message_ID=1

Mudcat has been a major part of my online existence for nearly two decades. I too first posted in 2001, although I'm taking a break at the moment having become disillusioned by the bear pit that below the line has become and which seems to have a meanness about it that I don't need in my life at the moment. It was ever thus in a way, but it seems I don't learn much now whereas I used to learn a lot from people I never would have met otherwise. Some of my most fundamental views were challenged and altered as a result of these discussions.

I learn lots from above the line, especially in the early days as a fledgling bouzouki player seeking advice and the kindness and generosity of folk got me off the ground. The Cat was a place you could ask beginner's questions without being treated like a dullard, and this continues to this day.

Not me Joe. I was aware of the DT since the Xerox days. I can't recall if I contributed any earlier, but my first post under my own name was in July '99. I posted under various monikers until the 'Healing for a mouse' thread caused the login policy to change.

Yes, I'm still here, though age and commitments have limited my **regular** participation.

My claim to fame is that I was in the room watching when Susan of DT and a non-member, Dennis Cook, were comparing notebooks of songs and thinking about merging their databases. Dick Greenhaus was there and soon worked up a way to transfer stuff to 5 1/4" floppys.. for a couple of years, the Digital Tradition was distributed that way.... then it was briefly hosted, as Joe Offer says, by Xerox... then Dick G found Max, and AWAY we went.

Has Bert Hansell posted recently? I see him on FB...

Gee, looking at these comments, I get the impression that some of us must be REALLY old! No wonder we're so crotchety...

I remember when Dick was still willing to distribute the Digital Tradition on single-sided floppy disks. How much data did those things hold?

I downloaded my first copy of the DT from the "files" area of Celebration Station, a dialup computer bulletin board (BBS) run by Noel Paul Stookey at Ellsworth, Maine. I think that was long before Dick moved to the Xerox site on the World Wide Web.

I'm just a baby - not yet into my teens. My first post was on 8th August 2008 - not quite 10 years ago - when I asked for info about the Robert Johnson who accompanied dulcimer player Roger Nicholson on their album, "Nonesuch for Dulcimer".

I got my information, and a very funny reply from a certain Greg Stephens (The Boat Band) - only to realise that it was the same Greg Stephens I'd played blues duets with back in the mid-1960s and lost touch with!

Such was the beauty of Mudcat then. I post far less these days, mainly because I have other things to do, but also because many of the people who posted then have gone from Mudcat - one way or another.

I've been here since 1998, I think. Or was it '97? I can blame Jeri for sucking me in, I mean, introducing me. Curmudgeon (Tom Hall) followed shortly.

I was originally Linn the Thanatolithologist (Jeri had lured me in with a gravestone symbolism thread), but I became Bat Goddess because of the nursery colony of Little Brown Bats that set up housekeeping in the roof space above the ceiling and started posting to music and folklore threads.

I notice that some of the early denizens if mudcat also inhabited rec.music.folk - example. Did mudcat fulfil a need that r.m.f couldn't meet? Was usenet unavailable or unfamiliar to a new 'generation' of internet users? Just curious - I'm interested in how internet technologies evolve.

Here in the UK we had uk.music.folk but that died in the late 2000's. Some of the people on u.m.f are here on mudcat: rollcall.

I'd known of mudcat for years - it was often referred to on u.m.f - but I assumed it was an exclusively U.S. site and never followed the forum. It was only after the BBC closed their Folk and Acoustic messageboards that I looked in here.

I still prefer usenet to most web forums, and still use it daily - but sadly no longer for folk music.

Sorry - somewhat off topic, but hopefully of interest.

DaveRo... alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.folk still has a semi-live group of posters. Right now there seems to be several posting some early "folk scare" stuff from the 60s... Kingston Trio, Tarriers, Limelighters, Baez... etc.
Depending on your provider that group can have things dating back several years.

Bill: I've never used binaries. My current ISP doesn't support them. uk.music.folk was used for much the same stuff as here: questions, event notifications, radio/TV alerts, bickering... I expect rec.music.folk was the same, but I didn't read it.

In the UK many ISPs stopped providing usenet about 10 years ago - I had to use eternal september for a while. Do US ISPs still offer it?

DaveRo.. my ISP quit doing ANY newsgroups several years ago. I simply pay a few dollars a month to Giganews and get my access. There's so much competition that prices have come down...

It just depends on one's needs

AFAIK, Verizon still supports some newsgroups, but only ones in the hierarchies it considers respectable. I moved over to Eternal September when that happened, and still use it without difficulty.

rec.music.folk still exists, but there is almost nothing on it. It used to be lively. For a while, I thought of the Mudcat Cafe as the monster that ate rec.music.folk, but I have gotten used to it. I appreciate its complete archiving, but its unstructured threads still annoy me occasionally.

Max owns and runs Mudcat; Gargoyle was a member who got kicked out a long time ago though he has been invited back (he has a really sharp tongue; his posts are conspicuous by their tiny colored italicized signature lines). He still adds many fine music posts and seems to prefer the current arrangement.

I have been posting here on and off since 1998 -- but i have never created a log-in. At first i thought you had to be invited and to jump through approval-hoops to get a name, and i am naturally shy and diffident, so i just posted as GUEST.

To this day, most of the time i am just GUEST but sometimes i use guest-names that contain variants of my real name, such as catherineyronwode / catyronwode / catyron / catanna.

I found Mudcat via rec.music.folk in usenet, but i left usenet around 2002 due to its non-moderated condition. I post in all sorts of folk music, acoustic blues, model railroad, and folk magic forums and at Facebook, and i am an editor at Wikipedia and at a number of other wiki-like sites, including one on fortune telling tea cups. .

I come here less frequently than i go to my other hang-out sites, simply because i don't need lyrics all that often and i have never "made friends" here. Still, Mudcat is always my go-to site for lyrics help. The disorganization of the threads does bother me, but the site is FREE and OPEN, so i love it!

I know that but Max said that he started posting under a different name. The only post that is listed for the time and date given was Gargoyle's first post as a member.

He did go on to say "...or was that someone else?". It would seem that Max was having a little joke.

I'm a baby here, still to celebrate my eleventh birthday. My first post was to ask Lucy in Bude (aka Hawker) about the upcoming 2007 Bude folk festival. Pleased to say that the Spring Bank Holiday folk festival in Bude (that's the bank holiday at the end of May) is still going strong. I see that Hawker hasn't posted here for quite a while.

My first post was in January 2001, but I'd been lurking for at least a year. Mudcat had a "Golden Age" where it was a real community. Just being a 'Catter was like belonging to an exclusive club - only it wasn't exclusive. It was open to everyone. I miss those days, and I especially miss the many 'Catters who've passed on. At some point, things started deteriorating, and a lot of people, including me, dropped out and moved on to places like Facebook. Facebook will never replace the old Mudcat - but Mudcat as it is now is only a shadow of what it once was. I do stop by and lurk occasionally, just for old time's sake.

Maryrrf, I agree.

There used to be a sense of community, and although there were sometimes differences of opinion, there was usually respect and often quirky humour, and different viewpoints of other people often created opportunities to possibly change our own viewpoints or broaden our knowledge.

I remember a lot of the people who have either sadly passed away, or moved away from Mudcat for various reasons.

Doug Chadwick, rose coloured glasses do not work when the evidence is there in black and white. Mudcat discussions from 27 years ago and onwards are still available to read.

The negative posts are a very minor percentage compared with the overwhelming majority of positive posts over the decades here which has been the cornerstone of that sense of community.

Folk music consists of nurturing the flame, not worshipping the ashes.
The same is true of Mudcat, no it is not the same as it was, nothing is and I know I'm not.
Yes there was some nastiness shit stirring and cruel messages, but there were good things too. We still have the same flour eggs milk and sugar we're just making different pancakes.

My first post as a member is dated 14 May 1999, but I posted as a guest for a couple of years before that. Can't remember my handle, but we got internet access in the office in autumn 1996. I soon found Mudcat but couldn't join because I was officially forbidden to use the Internet for purposes other than the job. In May '99 I got found out and had to get access from home ...

My interests shifted away from folk music after c. 2010 and I didn't look in very often, but this is changing again.

Nice to be reminded of all those Mudcatters who contributed in the early years - and really surprising how many are still here!

Well I first posted just 16 years ago. I've always been just me under my real name. There hasn't really been the Golden Age that a few folks here are lamenting. There's just been Mudcat with good music input and a touch of the Wild West with occasional true horrors, the conflicts mostly avoidable for those who find them unpalatable, but even the BS section has often had some really good stuff. Max was appealing for calm over 20 years ago, lest we forget. Anyway.

I'm glad that Joe mentioned Jim. Jim was head and shoulders above almost everyone else here in terms of his depth of knowledge of traditional song. He was goaded like mad by several people who are still here and who are far lesser lights than he is, and he paid the price by being unable to hold himself back from responding negatively. Even my chief buddies here (no names...) disagree with me about Jim, but I found him to be a really good-hearted chap with far more to offer than just about everyone else here and I miss his contributions. As I said, anyway...

I gave Bob Nelson (Deckman on Mudcat) a call yesterday to see how he and Judy are doing. Though he's virtually blind at this point he still gets out and plays music in his apartment complex and seems to be enjoying life. It was Bob and Don Firth who sent me emails in the early days telling me I should check out Mudcat, that there was a discussion about my late father (John Dwyer). That was probably 1999. I've had a couple of names here, and posted as a guest at first.

Jim was always very expansive in sharing his knowledge here. He often named the names of the illustrious and the legendary who he knew upclose and personal, but not once did I ever regard any of it as name-dropping. He is absolutely entitled to his musical opinions because they are exceptionally informed opinions. He and I always got on like a house on fire both in the forum and in private messages. He did have the unfortunate habit of relating the same jokes in the joke threads again and again, a trait which, sadly, I appear to have inherited. Next time you see him, Peter, give him my warmest regards.

Jim Carroll is posting regularly in one forum on Traditional Ballads on Facebook. He still has strong opinions about 'traditional', *grin*, but has a wealth of knowledge of the genre. Fortunately, I pretty much agree with his definition of the category.
