Obit: Ken Dodd (1927-2018)

Sad news. Singer-songwriter, comedian, actor and wielder of the tickling stick, Ken Dodd, has passed away aged 90. I never saw him live but I believe his shows were wonderful and always went on far longer than they should.

RIP Ken from one of the 'diddy men'.

Hi

Sad news. We saw him several times over the years. Never a dull moment and never a rude joke.

His shows often went on, and on more than one occasion we missed our bus home.

genuine funny man.

RIP

Mike

I saw him at Blackpool at the age of 16 and nearly wet myself with laughing. I saw him again - 35 years later in Horsham - with the same effect. Laughed until I cried.

Luckily, we went to the first house of the Horsham gig. As we came out, at around 10.30pm, the second house audience was waiting to go in...

A unique entertainer.

One of the Brit greats, for sure.

"I've started to practise safe sex - I've had a handrail fitted round the bed!"

"What a beautiful day! What a beautiful day for jumping into a supermarket trolley stark naked and shouting 'how about this for a special offer!'"

He was the best of the lot I reckon. Well, him and Billy Connolly, different enough for me to have two favourites!

I must have first heard Mr. Dodd on Workers Playtime! and found him hilarious ever since.

Not my favourite comedian but he did once pay for my dinner in a restaurant in Nottingham. He walked in... saw I was on my own and asked if he could sit with me. I said yes... he paid. He was good company. Some straight talk and a little of his humour at the table. Great respect..... and RIP Doddy!.

A great comedian and an expert at the double entendre eg the song "ap pyness" and married the love of his life 48 hours before he died

Ken Dodd was a top comedian back in the days when comedians were funny, he was charged with tax evasion, but was found not guilty much to the joy of most of the UK public.
Saw him twice in Summer shows at Blackpool when the weans were wee.

A truly funny man, in the best sense of the word... RIP.

You would not have understood his humour Acme.

Someone recently said to me that Australians obviously have no sense of humour because they laugh at American comedy. This was someone from the Uk who has lived in Australia since 1950.

Two (or is it three?) nations divided by a common language.

Happiness, Happiness, the greatest gift that I posses, I thank the Lord that I've been blessed, with more than my share of Happiness....

And it took me a few years to realise he was tempting fate, with that song. And he got away with it. His trick was never to nod a wink about it. A lot of his humour was obvious, but he knew subtlety. I would say that would make it his best joke.

Yes, Acme, I suppose my surprise was prematurely expressed. In a tribute to Doddy by Michael Grade on telly tonight, he said that his was a peculiarly British kind of humour. Another aspect was that he never used TV shows as his medium. Ken needed a live audience more than anything else. There are no Ken Dodd TV box sets that the Beeb could have sold to the yanks!

Yes, and by marrying his long time partner on Friday, he has managed to do the tax man out of a great deal of money.

He seemed to be a man with a wonderful attitude to life. He was part of all of our growing up years here in the UK.

By all accounts, he was a decent man according to those that knew him personally.

I saw him and Ms. Jones in a restaurant in Bournemouth five or six years ago and they were courteous to everyone who approached them.

There have been some negative comments in the local press regarding him "Shafting the British treasury". It was his money, he earned it and no doubt paid tax on it and Anne Jones has been satisfying his shaft for the past 40 years so she is fully entitled to the bestowment.

If you really see getting married to someone who's been you faithful partner for forty years as doing the taxman out of money, then an awful lot of married people are doing the taxman out of money. What a curmudgeon you are. Sheesh. And let me remind you that he was acquitted of the tax evasion charges.

Steve, Ken Dodd did not go to prison for tax evasion but in 1989 but should have.

He faced tax fraud charges at Liverpool crown court involving several hundred thousand pounds stored in the attic, under the bed, in suitcases, and offshore accounts.

The verdict was marred by the estimated £2million tax bill he faced, made up of legal fees and around £825,000 in tax he promised to pay back whatever the trial’s outcome.

After being cleared of tax evasion in the 1980s, Dodd has become a true national treasure. He has been knighted at the age of 89 for charity work and his outstanding career in entertainment lasting more than six decades.

So, my friend, I think the title "curmudgeon" is more fitting to you than the late Ken Dodd.

The investiture comes 25 years after he was first awarded an OBE for services to show business and charity

I never understood how Sir Ken Dodd only just got a knighthood after decades of excelling in his field and making millions feel happy.

Then Victoria Beckham gets an OBE for not being a good singer and not filling out a simple annual return from Companies House.

Steve, Mr. Dood was no curmudgeon.

Hang on a minute! The person I was calling a curmudgeon is "Guest Murpholly," not Ken Dodd. Ken was acquitted. Not guilty. Discharged. If there's an organiser of a lynch mob or kangaroo court here then I'm not listening! On top of that, the last two posters seem to have got what I said somewhat confused. Have a large espresso and try again!

Incidentally, keeping money in suitcases, attics, under mattresses and even in offshore accounts is not illegal. Not defending the latter, but doing any of those things does NOT make you a criminal!

e.g.. A man goes into a pet shop and goes up to a cage full of parrots'

"How much are your parrots?" he asks the owner.

"Well, he replied, the ones on the floor of the cage are 12/6d; the ones on the middle perch are 15 shillings and the ones on the top are 17/6d".

"Why are the ones on the top dearer?"

"They're on higher perches"

No disrespect for Ken intended...

[Red enters the lodge, feeling depressed]

Red Green: Harold, if the people of this community ever find out what we did in that parking lot to that cow, I will never be able to hold my head up high again.

Harold Green: You actually did it, Uncle Red? You did that whole "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" thing to that poor little defenseless milk-maker?

Red Green: We chickened out, Harold, every last one of us. There wasn't one guy who could look into those big brown eyes and nail her with a sledgehammer. Guys were sobbing and they got misty-eyed. At one point, Moose Thompson asked the cow to marry him. This is a dark day for the image of Possum Lodge.

Harold Green: Well, I for one am very proud of you, Uncle Red.

Red Green: Don't make it worse, Harold. I don't know how many vegetarians there are in this country, but I bet most of them work in slaughter houses. Eating meat is like having kids: the less you know about it, the more likely you are to go ahead.

Harold Green: Well, I hope you apologize to the cow, because she's had a very stressful day.

Red Green: Oh, you can tell that by the back seat of Stinky's Cadillac.

Huh?
