The session in March was extremely well attended by people from as far away as Macclesfield, Blackburn and Liverpool.
Thanks to Sue and Nick for organising this.

The Glad4Trad folk sessions are held every second Tuesday of the month at the Stubbing Wharf pub in Hebden Bridge, from 8 to 10.30pm. Mary Humphreys & Anahata were keen supporters of this new enterprise from the start in February, and there has been a growing attendance from other talented singers and musicians since then.

Many of them are known as booked guests at folk venues, but who also appreciate the opportunity to sing/hear traditional song in an informal atmosphere. A high quality and good variety of traditional song was therefore set right from the start, with choruses, classic ballads and lyrical pieces - unaccompanied and with instruments.

If this sounds like your kind of folk music, come along and enjoy some of our sessions in the months ahead. Forthcoming dates are: April 10th, May 8th, June 12th, July 10th, August 14th and September 11th. We'll be glad4trad to see you!

Stubbing Wharf has a car park, a restaurant, good beer and an acoustically excellent function room - donations of £3 are suggested to cover costs.

I go to quite a few (mainly tune) sessions and have never been asked to make a donation, l'm curious to know what costs the suggested £3 goes towards.

Nick's Glad4Trad sessions really deserve your support, they don't need any sniping from Guests regarding the suggestion of making a perfectly reasonable contribution.

Without wishing to hijack this thread though, just to emphasise that Glad4Trad has not replaced our own Just Voices session, which continues at Hunslet (Leeds) on the final Tuesday of each month.
The specific difference between the two sessions is that Just Voices is exactly that, for it was started up four years ago to fill a gap in the session scene (it is still to our knowledge the only session for purely unaccompanied singers in our region).

Why not come and support both sessions?

We have to pay for the room Ritchie. It's such a good venue it's worthwhile making a contribution.

Well Dave you've rattled your sabre but you have not answered the question I asked, is it a free and easy session or are some guests being paid to perform in which case its more of a folk club situation.

Thats fair enough Nick, I suspect your session is a bit different to the one's I attend.

No sabre rattling on this thread! In any case, it was Nick's question to answer, Richie (who's Dave?).
The point is that if there's a charge levied by the pub for use of the room, it's only fair for everyone to make a contribution towards that.

Guest - yes, it's true that a majority of pub-based sessions don't have use of a separate function room. And no, it wouldn't be called a session if it were a "paid to perform" scenario.

3rd Glad4Trad monthly folk session next week April 10th

Dear traditional song supporters

We're carrying on - with growing attendance!

Yes, the second of our new song & music sessions was enjoyed last month by an even greater selection of talented performers - you know who you are. So this is just a gentle reminder that our next meeting follows next week: Tuesday 10th April.

As those who have been before already know, our venue is the acoustically wonderful function room at the Stubbing Wharf pub in Hebden Bridge (HX7 6LU). The pub's other facilities include a car park, restaurant and rather good beer - do come much earlier if you want to eat there.

A high quality has been set, with choruses, ballads and lyrical pieces - unaccompanied and with instruments. If this sounds like your kind of folk music, do join us any second Tuesday of the month, from 8pm to 10.30pm, to celebrate traditional folk song with like-minded performers and listeners. We'll be glad4trad to see you!

Old NK ...
I seem to remember the room is on the same level as the canal towpath. And there was an exit to the canal towpath, but maybe a few steps were still involved ...?
The pub would the best people to ask.
See the link in the second post, it should get you a phone number.

I played there many times with my mate Clive a few years ago at the Open Mic Surgery, no-one had to pay to get in, it's a bit like being charged an entrance fee to drink beer.

What is better for the landlord an empty room or one filled with people drinking ?

Thanks for your support Dick, (bit of a way for you to come unfortunately)

Dear traditional song supporters

Happy May Day!

What better month to sing folk songs with its name in the first line: I wonder how many we could fit in to one evening? This is just a gentle reminder that next Tuesday, 8th May, will be the fourth meeting of our song & music sessions at the Stubbing Wharf pub in Hebden Bridge (HX6 6LU).

As those who have been before already know, the function room there is great to sing in, and the pub's other facilities include a car park, restaurant and rather good beer - do come much earlier if you want to eat there. We'll start singing at 8pm and aim to finish by 10.30pm, although sometimes run a little later to get everybody in.

A high quality has been set, with choruses, ballads and lyrical pieces - unaccompanied and with instruments. If this sounds like your kind of folk music, do join us on any second Tuesday of the month to celebrate traditional folk song with like-minded performers and listeners.

Dear traditional song supporters

Just to remind you, next Tuesday, 12th June, will be the fifth meeting of our folk song & music sessions at the Stubbing Wharf pub in Hebden Bridge (HX7 6LU).

Singing starts at 8pm and continues until 10.30pm or a little later, with a short interval for lively music discussion or gossip. We're still enjoying a high standard of songs, unaccompanied and with instruments, and of tune sets from accomplished musicians. There are even those who come just to listen, and they're most welcome.

Readers of Tykes' News will see a short piece on our sessions at the front of the current issue, which may encourage even more like-minded performers and listeners to come along, which will be great. The room is big enough to accommodate a few more quite comfortably, and still be great to sing in.

If this sounds like your kind of traditional folk music evening, do join us next week - or on any second Tuesday of the month - we'll be glad4trad to see you!

Just to remind you that next Tuesday, 10th July we'll be meeting again for a traditional folk song & music session at the Stubbing Wharf pub in Hebden Bridge (HX7 6LU).

We'll be starting at 8pm (usually with some gorgeous music from Mary Humphreys & Anahata), continuing until 10.30pm or a little later, with a short interval for lively music discussion or gossip. We're still trying to encourage a good proportion of unaccompanied song, although instruments are not unwelcome - and of course can contribute to tune sets from accomplished musicians.

And not forgetting those who come just to listen, who are most welcome. We'd like to see even more like-minded performers and listeners to come along, as the room is big enough to accommodate extra people comfortably, and still be great to sing in.

If this sounds like your kind of traditional folk music evening, do join us next week on 10th - or on any second Tuesday of the month - we'll be glad4trad to see you!

It's encouraging to read that you would welcome more unaccompanied singers though, and I will try to make it one day, but I don't have many second-Tuesdays free.

Good luck, and regards to all.

Dear singing companions

It may be deep into festival season, but Nick Dow and Sue Burgess will still be running their Glad4Trad session next Tuesday, 14th August. Yes, that date falls between Sidmouth and Whitby Folk Weeks, but we'll be gathering with friends old and new at the Stubbing Wharf pub in Hebden Bridge (HX7 6LU).

Our last meeting was a particularly splendid one, starting as usual with the marvellous musicianship of Mary Humphreys & Anahata, and supplemented as usual - but separately - with the talents of Peter & Barbara Snape, who are also regular supporters.

Whilst unaccompanied traditional singers are particularly encouraged, we also enjoyed the combined vocal and instrumental delights of Caffrey/McGurk/Madge - the first time that the full complement of Nick, Ed and Robin had managed to visit us together as a band.

If this sounds like your kind of traditional folk music evening, do join us a week next Tuesday on 14th - or any second Tuesday of the month - we'll be glad4trad to see you!

I too am glad2hear it is going well.

I only wish i could say the same for our Just Voices session at Hunslet (on the final Tuesday of the month), which is really struggling of late, and for no readily discernible reason.

But if Glad4Trad is lacking in unaccompanied singers too, then there must be a region-wide shortage. Maybe we are after all an endangered species, now fast becoming a dying breed?

Our aim continues to be the encouragement of traditional folk song and music, providing a particularly supportive environment for unaccompanied singers, however instruments of all sorts are welcome.

We did try to get there but the combination of a road closure and no diversion signs meant we ended up stuck for ages. on single track roads with a lot of other people with the same idea. In the end we gave up and turned for home.
Not the first time recently that traffic management has failed dismally in the area when faced with road closures. Farmed out to private companies again.

Nick Dow and Sue Burgess would like to wish you all a happy new singing year, with plenty of your favourite music. Attendances have been low the last two months, and since we have to pay for the room, we need to improve this for the session to continue.

The first of this year's monthly Glad4Trad sessions at Hebden Bridge falls next Tuesday, 8th January. Come along to listen, chat or make your own contributions, whether with instruments or unaccompanied - you'll be very welcome. We hope the company will continue to include such established regulars such as Mary Humphreys & Anahata, Peter & Barbara Snape and many other good folk beside.

To remind you, we meet every second Tuesday of the month at The Stubbing Wharf pub (HX7 8LU). Proceedings start at 8pm through until 10.30pm or a little later. If this sounds like your kind of traditional folk music evening, we'll be glad4trad to see you!

Guess what? Next week will mark a whole year since Nick Dow and Sue Burgess started their Glad4Trad traditional song and music sessions.

Yes, we have met every second Tuesday for the past twelve months - despite obstacles such as flooded roads, winter illnesses and awkward weather, so we must be doing something right. Especially when we attract performing visitors from exotic locations further afield such as Massachusetts and even Sheffield! More visits from these directions are promised later this year .....

So come along and celebrate at our 13th gathering, next Tuesday 12th February. We start at 8pm and continue until about 10.30pm, and our venue remains the function room at the Stubbing Wharf pub in Hebden Bridge, HX7 8LU. There will be seasoned regulars such as the ever-popular Peter & Barbara Snape, but all are welcome who enjoy performing or just listening to traditional song and music.

You may expect to hear instruments on their own or used with songs and ballads, and we aim to provide a particularly supportive atmosphere for unaccompanied singers. If this sounds like your kind of traditional folk music evening, we'll be glad4trad to see you!

Just to make it plain. It is not all unaccompanied, all forms of accompaniment are encouraged. The only brief is songs should be learned not read, and Traditional. That means any tradition of the English speaking world and beyond. We had a song in Gaelic not so long ago. Please give us a try. The address is above. It's this Tuesday.

As usual, we'll be in the function room at the Stubbing Wharf pub in Hebden Bridge, HX7 8LU; starting at 8pm and continuing until about 10.30pm. Dear singing companions

Nick Dow and Sue Burgess welcome "British Summer Time" (whatever that may be) with another gathering for traditional song and music next Tuesday, 9th April.

This month we are pleased to welcome back that Hampshire man from Massachusetts, Tim Radford, who first visited last October and delighted us with some splendid songs from his extensive repertoire. He enjoyed himself so much that he's making another diversion up to see us on his current UK visit!

Seasoned regulars, such as Peter & Barbara Snape, are always welcome - as are all those who enjoy listening to or performing traditional song. We hope to provide a particularly supportive environment for unaccompanied singers, but are also happy to hear musicians using instrumental accompaniment, or playing tune sets together.

Come and join us soon: we start at 8pm and continue on until 10.30pm or a bit longer if necessary to get everybody in who wants to perform. As usual, our meeting place is the Stubbing Wharf pub in Hebden Bridge: car park outside and good beer/food inside. We'll be glad4trad to see you!

Dear singing companions

Well, I'm not sure what happened to "British Summer Time" (!), but there's always some sunshine to be had at the Glad4Trad monthly sessions in Hebden Bridge - happening again next Tuesday, 14th May.

Nick Dow and Sue Burgess are looking forward to seeing regular supporters and occasional visitors alike: all those who enjoy performing or listening to traditional folk song and music. We start at 8pm and continue on until 10.30pm - or a bit longer if necessary to fit in all those who wish to perform. This is a particularly supportive environment for unaccompanied singers, but we also welcome musicians using instrumental accompaniment, or playing tune sets together.

As usual, our meeting place is the Stubbing Wharf pub, with exclusive use of its function room. The pub has a car park and can be found across a narrow bridge on the left as you leave Hebden Bridge on the A646 road towards Burnley, at that point called King Street. Postcode is HX7 6LU.

If you can't join us next week, make a note in your diaries for all second Tuesdays of the months following - we'll be glad4trad to see you!

Keighley isn't going to work out - no transport back to Hebden at night.

Anything in Halifax?
