13 Mar 18 - 09:13 PM (#3910954) Subject: Plans for St. Patrick's Day? From: GUEST,Lin I was wondering of Mudcatter's plans for St. Patrick's Day? Is anyone going to hear Irish music anywhere? Going to a parade perhaps? Where I live in California there are no parades but mostly individual Irish type bars/pubs have their own celebration with a band or two playing at night. I don't live near any of these Irish pubs so about the only celebration related to St. Patrick's Day is that some restaurants put on an Irish meal of corned beef and cabbage. The closest restaurant to me having a St. Patrick's meal all day is Norm's Restaurant. No music though, just a corned beef,cabbage and potatoes dinner with some kind of green desert I think. I might go to that and wear my green St. Patrick's vest with Irish characters on it and a green St. Patrick's scarf I have. |

From: Bat Goddess I was either along with Tom (Tom Hall, Mudcat's Curmudgeon) and his band (The Cuckoo's Nest or Great Bay Company) or, in the later years, performing with him, at The Press Room. Tom and his group played there every St. Patrick's Day from when the Press Room opened in November 1976 until Tom lost his voice to vocal cord cancer in the summer of 2009. Bob Frost then led a performance by mix of our Friday session family. I was ill in 2011 so couldn't drive Tom to The Press Room (he was legally blind by then) and just before St. Patrick's Day in 2012 he slipped on the deck and broke his ankle. He passed away in 2013. I just can't go out for music on St. Patrick's Day, even to hear friends. I. Just. Can't. Too many memories. And I don't have the patience to deal with the arschlochs that seem to abound. I have green shamrock earrings that have this tiny battery in them. When you press on the center of the earrings they flash on & off continually until you press down on them again. I will wear them to the restaurant (that serves an Irish meal all day) and keep the earrings on flashing mode while I dine there. No Irish music there though. It's a regular large restaurant and they do the Irish meal every year for about $12.00 or $13.00 I think and includes desert. Don't forget to wear your shamrock earrings too!! |

From: GUEST,Lin To Big Al Whittle, The Irish meal served today in the restaurant I went to in California near where I live was corned beef and cabbage, red potatoes & carrots. The meal also came with soup and salad and for desert green mint icecream all for $12.99. (Of course the soup and salad was just part of the meal anyway which they always serve every day.) It was ok accept the corned beef was a little on the fatty side but had a good flavor and good portion. The green mint icecream was good! We got there about noon and restaurant was packed! Not all restaurants serve an Irish meal today, just a few I think in my area. |

You really went all out with all the Irish items you were wearing. I had my flashing green earrings on in the restaurant and a green shamrock design scarf around my neck. My waitress complimented my earrings and said they looked great! I had them flashing the entire time while in restaurant. No one else with flashing earrings but saw other people with green shirts, socks and hats of different styles. So my earrings will come out again next year. No Irish sports events here though. Glad you went all out with your flashing. :-)) |

Billed as a ceilidh, with Jiggety Pig. So I wore my green tee-shirt with a picture of a pig playing Irish bagpipes. The Irish Dance display came on first, then went home, or stayed in the green room amusing themselves, I really needed them on the dance floor as there were only about 3 couples willing to get up most of the evening. The evening livened up when, ignoring previous promises to parents we Played The Wild Rover yet again, and people sang. I thought it was a good idea to wave the mike at the loudest group, had second thoughts when someone tried to bang the table with it. Then for the last half hour people did get up. I'd abandoned my carefully research Irish Dances by then, but I had them Galloping in Galopede, dipping and diving as Waves of the Sea (a much simplified Waves of Tory), then circling, starring and swinging in Snowball. Should have stopped there, only the loyal 3 couples for the last dance. Hope Arthur's band did better in Macc & Crewe. |

We did "The Dancing Master" a good many times because just as one person got used to it, another person came in and had to learn it. I don't know how it came up, but I remarked that if you play an Irish dance backwards, you see where 20th-century composers got their themes. (You can't usually call them melodies.) I should have mentioned that we were using tranparencies. So we turned it upside-down and played it, then turned it over and played it. The first way sounded most like the 20th C. Playing it turned-over was hard for me on guitar, because I had to look at the notes going forward but the chords going backward i.e., from right to left inside a measure. Then we played a number that came from the Mudcat. It is a poem by Sir Walter Scott about a wandering harper. I had put it to music. It was a big hit, especially the part that threatens that the baron's family will never thrive unless he's good to harpers. Snacks followed, then we finished up with Si Beag, Si Mhor. That doesn't sound like many pieces, but we did a lot with the three of them. |
