2018 Obit: Dominic Dowsey-Magog (Shanty Crew)

We were informed last night that Dom passed away suddenly at work. Dom will be remembered with his singing with The Shanty Crew, The Five Men not Called Matt and others. He travelled extensively singing his Shanties around the world.
He was a big Man with a big voice and an extensive knowledge of shanties and other songs, and didn't have a nasty bone in his body.
He will be greatly missed wherever there is a song to be sung

RIP Dom.

A friend for 37+ years as member of the Shanty Crew, and after I left the group, in regular contact on face book. A great bloke, great sense of humour, peacekeeper, and someone who knew how to live and enjoy life to the full.

Will miss you, shipmate.

Just heard the sad news from friends in Netherlands.

Dom was a great guy, always amiable and cheerful and that marvellous rich voice . . . . . . .
Everyone will miss him.

R.I.P. Dom.

A stalwart of the Lancaster Maritime Festival.Very funny but always a professional and dedicated performer. When Dominic stepped forward to sing, you Knew you were in for a treat.Smiling now, while thinking of him performing in the Shanty Crew's Crossing the Line Ceremony - naked except for his grass skirt, coconuts bra and ofcourse, his trademark flat cap.

Very sad news. Rest in peace Dom.

Hello everybody.

This is Paul Dowsey-Magog, Dominic's brother, who is now in Northampton.

I have had discussions with my sister Deirdre, and with Chris Roche, Dominic's singing partner for 37 years, and we have finalised the timing for the funeral now that the official paperwork has finally been completed.

The date will be Friday 11 May at 2.45pm -prompt start at Three Counties crematorium near Northampton and very close to the M1 on Towcester Road. (A5123)

Following this will be a more informal social gathering at St Crispin Social club in Duston, Northampton, about 15 minutes drive away.

St Crispin Social Club is located in Duston, Northampton. It has a bar , lounge, games room with skittles and darts and function rooms.

Start about 4 PM. Depending on traffic from crematorium.

This has a bar, and food will also be provided.

If you wish to wear Shanty/Singing costume/dress this is welcome.

There will be a remembrance book to sign for condolences etc.

Also a Donation box for RNLI (Lifeboat Charity)

We also hope to issue guests with a memorial CD of Dominic singing at the

Whittlebury Festival.

After General Introductions, Chris Roche, with assistance from myself, and one or two others, will MC an initial song, possibly Fiddlers Green, then co-ordinate contributions of a vocal or singing nature from all those who wish to add anecdotes, a few words or shanties/songs or whatever.

At some point we will hope to wind up the singing ceremony with a mass choral rendition of Leave Her Johnny Leave Her.

There should be time after that for general chatting if wanted.

NB. It would be extremely useful to get an idea how many attendees/singers might want to do what, perhaps co-ordinated by information feed to Chris Roche so he can tally numbers, likely attendance etc.

I do not know most of Dominic's UK singing friends, so I suggest that for those not hooked up to the Shanty Singing world, or who don't know Chris Roche, you might know Moose Rosser, who can forward those details to Chris and myself.

For anyone else, please feel free to contact me personally: Paul Dowsey-Magog.

I am on email : pensorter@hotmail.com

My UK mobile number: 075 2605 9352

I would be happy to discuss numbers attending and/or suitability of contributions, or even have a chat over a coffee or beer somewhere in Northampton prior to the funeral. There are certainly some of his friends I would like to meet informally.

Hope to see you there!

Paul

Hello Joe,

I wish to place an addition to the Obit thread for Dominic Dowsey-Magog of the Shanty Crew.

But there may be a problem.

His singing partner Chris Roche is not really computer savvy and neither am I really.

Chris took some of Dom's ashes to the Baltic sea and has sent me the following attachment with photos and asked me to put it up on MudCat.

It's been a long while coming and is 6 months after the funeral but may be of interest to some.

I can add the dialogue to the thread, but Chris included Photos and some captions as you see. Please look at the attached & post it in full, or tell me how to,

Or let me know what's possible or preferred and I'll talk to Chris Roche first.

Many Thanks,

Paul Dowsey-Magog
