Had a binge-watch of the three proper original films last night.

Star Wars is fun, but if I had to choose, it'd always be Star Trek for me.

I've never watched Star Wars and I know nothing about it whatsoever. The other week I did accidentally watch that film with the huge spidery things with snakey arms that eventually died after throwing up out of their spaceship. I think it had Tom Cruise in it, a man about whom I know nothing. I've never watched a single minute of East Enders or the now-defunct Neighbours. I watched Star Trek a lot, and Doctor Who when I was little. This post contains no braggadocio.

I watched "2001" several times and loved it, though I struggled to forgive Stanley for using the Blue Danube recording by the Nazi Herbert Von Karajan.

You would like "The Orville" if you liked the original Star Trek, Steve. I just finished the first series and the nods to Star Trek are many. Seth MacFarlane, a TV genius in my opinion, had a lot to do with it as well as taking the lead role.

During the first (UK) run of Babylon 5, I was contemplating the difference between it and Star Trek. I came up with the following definition:

Space Opera (n): Science Fiction with a single-episode attention span.

Let battle commence.

I can highly recommend "The Orville". Seth MacFarlane's new SciFi. Lots of nods to Star Trek and even one to Star Wars in the episode I saw last night :-D

I keep wanting to type Seth Lakeman instead of MacFarlane!

The Orville just gets better and better. While the show is decidedly light and humorius, the topics covered are far deeper than you would imagine from a SciFi.

What am I missing? I thought both St George and Shakespeare were celebrated on April 23.

Yes, Shakespeare April 23rd, Also St George (in England where he's patron saint)
Elsewhere in Europe his day is 5 May (Eastern Orthodox) and as he's not from England, their choice of date is equally acceptable.
I first became aware of this reading Dracula (Chapter 1)

Also 23 April would probably equate to 5 May if we hadn't chopped 11 days out of our calendar in 1752.

Actually that bit is arse-backward.
The start of the year (the 'quarter day') March 25th became April 6th giving us the start of the financial (tax) year when they chopped 11 days out of September 1752.

Ah, OK. Nowt to do with May the Fouth then :-D

Another weird thing about that calendar change is the UK financial year starting on April 6. It seems that new year used to be 1st of April before it was January. When the calendar changed, the UK government decided to keep the financial year where it was!

So I was told anyway...
