Obit: John Campbell Munro (1947-2018)

This from Eric Bogle:-

Eric Bogle is with Alana Cole-Munro.

John Campbell Munro, my best mate, my soul brother, and my my musical partner in crime for nearly 40 years, died at his home in Brisbane, Queensland on Thursday 10th May at around 5am, just as the kookaburras outside raucously joined in the avian dawn chorus welcoming the new day. In his final hours on planet Earth he was surrounded by family and friends who filled the room where he lay with much pride, love, and heartbreak in equal measure....I'll add more about my dear friend in days to come, and post some of his music for you to share, but just at this moment I feel too tired to continue, I am still in shock I think, I feel numb and have not yet fully emotionally admitted to the devastating loss of an exceptional man who became one of the strongest and most enduring pillars that has unfailingly and selflessly propped up both my personal and musical life for the past 40 years, ......

John Munro was on so many fine albums. Tracey-Munro-Tracey; Liz & John Munro, Family Favourites; Country Express; several albums of Kate Delaney and Gordon McIntyre; Colcannon; and of course all the work with Eric Bogle. My condolences to family and friends.

So sorry to hear this news. Loved the high harmonies John sang to Eric's songs, the banter between them, and also the Colcannon band.

Saw them both years ago in a small folkclub, Although they had PA problems meant that they did almost all of the evening acoustically and a memorable evening it turned out to be. So sorry to hear this news,

Very sad news that John has left us. A talented musician, singer, songwriter and all-around gentleman who will be missed greatly.
Deepest condolences to John's family whom I met at the Top Half in Alice Springs some years ago.
VALE John Munro

Only recently heard of his passing, but I well remember some great concerts and banter over the years. He will be sorely missed here, but certainly joins a great group of muso mates, gone before. Vale John.

So sorry and sad to hear of John's passing... Eric and The Bogle Band (and ex- Bogle Band members), John's wife Alana, and John and Alana's families and friends. Some of Eric and John's songs and music just will never be the same without the two ( Eric and John) of them together

A great voice has been silenced! We enjoyed many concerts with John & Eric both here in Canada and in Australia - he was a cuddly bear of a man and we always hoped we could time a visit to Scotland to see them there too, twas not to be but his music lives on.

I'm late to this news, and very, very saddened to read it. John aka Jock was an amazing talent wrapped up in a very humble man. His songs, his harmonies and his playing were all just wonderful and in a variety of genres too. From Tracey-Munro-Tracy, through Country Express, Colcannon, and of course, all the wonderful music he made with Eric. I am sure many are still shattered by his loss. Thank you Eric for telling us of his last moments and I am glad to hear he was surrounded by family and friends.
I am also battling cancer, 3 years along the journey with kidney cancer which is progressing despite my positivity and best efforts. After a recent scare with two hospitalisations for pneumonia, I am getting organised for my funeral (though I still hope I have another year or two in me yet - I've a lot to do). Two of the songs that I have chosen come from Country Express - "Who Will Sing for Me?" (I have a wonderful choir where I now live near Toowoomba so they will!), and also "Praise God! I feel like singing, I'm on the other side of life now!" surely the most joyous song about dying there is. I well remember a concert they did at the Octagon in Perth years ago when they just released the 'Another Lonesome Morning' album with Praise God on, that and the spine-tingling arrangement of "House of Gold" too. I ran out in the interval and bought it! Then they all come back on stage wearing the covers (vinyl LPs remember) as hats! I taught those songs to my Perth choir HarmonyUs and another one they did, "All Gods Critters got a Place in the Choir" became our theme song. One of my smaller groups here also love singing it. Jock's varied music has had a big impact on my life and while I am sorry he has gone before me, if we go anywhere after this life, I'll look forward to singing with him when I get there. Vale dear John.

Incredible, but I have only just discovered today that John died last year. Only as recently as the last few days, have I been listening to one of Eric Bogles albums, and again enjoyed John's harmonies and banter with Eric. As a fellow Aussie Scot of the same age and a 'dabbling' wanna be folky, I appreciate his work and the musical legacy John leaves. Although late, I offer my condolences to John's family, friends, and musical collaborators over the years. RIP.

A nice trio. Not sure how active the Traceys are these days, this was 31 years ago!

I too am late to this news. I knew John as both a musician and social worker and am so sad to hear of his death last year. He and Eric Bogle and Colcannon are three of my favourite and most talented folk singers. What a tragic loss for music, his family and friends.

I had the pleasure of Seeing Eric and John play in Stirling, Scotland, some years ago, on the last tour. It was a small venue, and it was that night I was struck by John's wonderful harmonies. I am so sad to hear of his passing - there are some people you wish could live for ever......

Far too late hearing about John's passing. Tracey-Munro-Tracey, Country Express, Tintagel (my introduction to John) John & Liz Munro, Eric B, Colcannon. When I was still in Adelaide John very kindly gave me some home recordings of Tintagel, John & Liz on the ABC and sessions with Bob Hardie and Alastair Rattray, which will now be just a wee bit more treasured.
A sad loss to Australian music.

Hannah and i are shocked and saddened to to hear of the passing of John. Memories of all the concerts we attended and John was always the most of approachable of people with ready wit and genuine interest in the conversation. The guitar was an instrument made for John both in perfect harmony as were his vocals..We are stunned .. we can not find the words but some day Eric will. In some quite corner of an afternoon we will remember those halcyon days..replaceable..we will never lose them..Our thoughts with all his family and friends..

I was looking John up after hearing a particular Eric Bogle track and found out he had passed.

How sad, I had deep respect for his ability to sing but particularly his wonderful guitar harmonies.

I hope you're in peace John and your guitar is always in tune.

Like Brian, I was listening to some live duets by Eric and John, and subsequently learned of John's passing.

To a great man and his musical legacy.
