If you are into building clones, the Burns Buzzaround is a bit of a holy grail...

Yes I know but doesn't sound too good by my tired ears. Best clone I ever built was the ADA Flanger with mods by a clever Canadian for almost thru zero flanging. This was achieved first I believe by the Electroharmonix Flanger Hoax, designed by a clever Dutchman with whom I had some contact a few years ago. That uses 2 x MN 3207, 2 x LM13700 for a Dome Filter and numerous opamps for static fixed phase shift networks.

Best early flanger to my ears was the EH Electric Mistress, the 2 battery version which used the SAD 1024 bucket brigade IC, now almost impossible to source in a reliably working form, Secret of its sound was the minimal filtering used.

I'm no electronics geek - but admire folks who are...

Back about 10 years ago I went mad buying hand made clones of classic vintage fuzzes and treble boosters...
Some were excellent quality for affordable prices...

1 or 2 I had to buy from America, which pushed the prices up..
But worth it for an accurate Mosrite Fuzzbox copy...

I found a couple of UK builders who did Vox tremeloes..
the really choppy ones..

I really must get the boxes out to double check I left no batteries in
that might have leaked...

that Boss Delay schematic look a little too schematic.

IC14 ("LFO" - Low Freq Oscillator) feeds the "Clock Gen" only in chorus mode. In echo mode it gets a second control knob but sits there doing nowt. There is something implicit they aren't telling you.
BDB looks like yer main delay (Bucket Brigade Device - delay set by "Clock Gen"), set by the clock frequency, but FCF beats me. Is it a Fully-Connected Filter (?) or a Frequency Correlation Function (aka a phaser?). The circuit diag doesn't give me much more.

It would be interesting to know.

I think the filter cut off frequency is controlled by varying the 4016 gates' resistance with a portion of the main bbd clock. Lowering its frequency will increase bbd delay, with a corresponding drop in filter cut off frequency to preserve as clean a signal as possible. MXR used this trick on several of their products too, but I have not seen it used by Roland/Boss before. Ah yes it was used in the original ADA Final Phase unit, although I haven't seen the circuit for the reissue.

And here is the MXR Phaser pedal which uses pulse width modulated transmission gates:

I remember the days when we used to write a letter to manufacturers of these units asking for circuit diagrams!!! Sometimes I would turn up at Roland on the North Circular Road, where they would sell Service Notes for £5 a time, all ICs were £5 each as well, which was great for analogue bucket brigade ICs!!

I found the service manual for my Juno 106 synth, with full circuit diagrams, online. It came in very useful later on when the beast started playing up. Having identified the module at fault, I wrote to Roland asking if they still sold spares - their answer was to send me one by return, with an invoice. How's that for service?

Was that recently? My visits to Roland were before 1989 when I lived in North London and had clients to visit in the Ealing area.
