26 Jun 18 - 12:37 AM (#3933395) Subject: BS: Hey rap From: olddude Going old school for moose this year. Dragged out my marlin 45-70. That puppy fires a 405 grain bullet large and slow. Just reloaded a bunch. Kicks like a mac truck. I have a Black and blue shoulder. That caliber is 153 years old but still widely in use. Effective range max 150 yards then drops like the titanic. However and thing it hits is immediately hamburger. Look it up. Lever action |
26 Jun 18 - 12:43 AM (#3933396) Subject: RE: BS: Hey rap From: olddude It was first use and issued to the caverly for the indian wars. They started with a 525 grain bullet with 70 grain black powder load. Many of the guys were knocked off their horse so they switched to 405 grain. Great gun for grizzly bear and will deck a moose in its tracks. You have to lob it in. Flat shooting it’s not |
26 Jun 18 - 01:01 AM (#3933397) Subject: RE: BS: Hey rap From: olddude The modern powders have pushed it from 1300 fps to over 2000 but it’s still a lobber. Other than a busted shoulder it’s a riot to shoot. You feel like a buffalo hunter |

26 Jun 18 - 03:23 PM (#3933556) Subject: RE: BS: Hey rap From: gnu Don't you dare hit him in the blades with that, Dan. High neck or nuthin, although you will lose mincemeat. Of course, if you are close, as you say, a clean boiler room won't lose much meat, if at all but, depends on where you are and where he is. And, 405 grain? Do you have someone to carry your ammo? >;-) |

27 Jun 18 - 09:35 PM (#3933772) Subject: RE: BS: Hey rap From: Rapparee My .45-70 cartridges are 405 grains, lead flat point. my big bore rifle for that cartridge has a ladder rear sight now; I also have its little brother in .45LC. I recently purchased a Marlin 1894 in .45LC; now I have to take everything out to the range a re-sight it all in. I've pretty much gone from .357 to .45 Colt; I figger that it'll do all I want it to do. In fact, I'm pretty much set for when the buffalo herds return to the golf course out back. We've had mulies and moose and a wolf on the golf course, black bear and grissly are now prowling in the nearby hills, and at least one moose and one mountain lion has been darted and moved by Fish and Game from in-town so far this year. |
28 Jun 18 - 09:54 PM (#3933961) Subject: RE: BS: Hey rap From: olddude Try putting some hsm 430 grain plus p bear loads. Boy that rattled my teeth. The old 405 grain Remington cor locs are like an 06. My max 405 well they kind hurt lol. Ican make you a box. Gnu the casull is coming with me with max 340 grain penn hardcast rounds I made. If it’s in range I am using the handgun. I have a top of the line burris scope on it and shoot two inch groups at 100 yards with a handgun off a rest |
28 Jun 18 - 09:59 PM (#3933962) Subject: RE: BS: Hey rap From: olddude Buffalo bore bear load is another where did my shoulder go load. But having a grizzly that close I want some old school force on my side while dressing a moose. You guys wanna go? |
28 Jun 18 - 10:03 PM (#3933963) Subject: RE: BS: Hey rap From: olddude Giving the size of those costal brown bears I figured my 06 would probably take him down. It would bind up his intestines when he tried to crap out me and my rifle |
29 Jun 18 - 09:18 AM (#3934067) Subject: RE: BS: Hey rap From: Rapparee Where and when? I've moderated recoil with pads. Can't remember which one at the moment, but it's gel-filled. I'm reminded of the time my brother discovered he could hunt black bear with a spear in Arkansas. He asked me to go along. In response to my question "Why?" he replied that he wanted someone behind him with a BFG. |
