That's right about now. Get over there.

What's a wurzel? Any relationship to mangelswurzel?

its Dorset slang, BUT ACCORDING TO WIKI.. A wurzel is a farming bumpkin from the little Hampshire village of Portsmouth.THER WAS A POLUR CROOSOVER FOLK BAND CALLED the wurzels, yes its a corruption of mangel wurzel, meaning country bumpkin, where iu come from they were called swede bashers , cos they ate lots of swedes or turnips

Are you sure it's a not a rutabaga? Is it orange in color or purple and white?

In one of my favorite passages from P.G. Wodehouse, beautiful but vacant Veronica gazes at Tipton, the young American millionaire, "like a cow staring at a mangelwurzel on the other side of the fence."

I paraphrase.

The Sandman, thanks for that^. It kind of clears up the meaning behind the expression - I didn't just fall off the turnip truck.

I mean after all why not pumpkin truck? In a general sense it would make as much sense as turnip truck, except now with what you said, hmmm, puzzle solved?

No, a pumpkin is not the same. Turnips are stupider than pumpkins. The smell and the taste, for example.

I grew turnips one year, then we didn't want to eat them. They taste like dirt.

FYI, wurzel is German for root. Mangel means defect.

Sandman, how was the gig?

"FYI, wurzel is German for root. Mangel means defect."

True, but "mangelwurzel" is derived from the German Mangoldwurzel - "Mangold" on its own means Swiss chard. Nothing to do with Mangel/defect.
