His commitment to American music and to the trumpet was legendary. He was the sort of musician equally at home within the confines of "straight-ahead" jazz, the kind you have to be schooled and mentored over time, thoroughly, in order to play it, and the music of r-n-b and 'soul' recording artists. The dark side, is that Roy Hargrove received both the good and the evil from those around him, mentors or otherwise, in the business. In his 20's, he was already using heroin. Cocaine would be added at some point. These contributed significantly to the kidney disease that took his life before his 50th birthday. Hargrove has spent years requiring dialysis. By the time he stopped using the 'hard stuff', the damage was done. In the online media, the tributes are pouring in. Eventually we will hear from Wynton Marsalis, who discovered Hargrove in Hargrove's native Waco, Texas. Right now I have yet to see a Marsalis statement. Of course Marsalis and Hargrove were eight years apart in age, so Marsalis was very much the elder brother. It has got to hurt like hell, when your little brother dies before you do. |

After admittance, Hargrove went into cardiac arrest and died in hospital. |

Had Hargrove been here, alive, he was scheduled to perform there tonight. There are documented past instances when his health caused appearances -- even entire tours -- to be cancelled. |

Roy Hargrove had his own distinctive sound and by the standard of sound he was reliable and exemplary. By sight, it's something else. I have seen numerous photographs of his face through his short life, in the past days of reports following his recent demise. Some of those photographs do not, I mean do NOT, look like the same man, and they are not that many years apart. Questlove, the drummer for The Roots, posted a Tweet that praised Roy Hargrove to the skies. A photography was included. The face was young, unlined, and lean, just as young Roy Hargrove was slight of build. By some news reports featuring interviews with management, Hargrove required dialysis for the last thirteen years. That means he was under forty years of age when he first was prescribed dialysis. And sure enough, the face went all puffy, not to mention the lines. |
