28 Dec 99 - 10:40 PM (#155027) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Danny Kaye From: catspaw49 Thanks SUSAR!!!! Great job!!! He WAS really great wasn't he? Karen and I watch his movies when they're on and both of us are completely in love with the man. His TV series was always watched at our house...my mom was a huge fan too. His benevolent works were so numerous and his obvious love of kids made him one of those special stars who "gave back" and that's always high on my list of good traits. I think one his greatest bits was the VERY verbal, but without words, song he did about the guy getting his draft notice and going into the army. A GREAT and probably a one off....only one Danny Kaye. Spaw |
28 Dec 99 - 11:11 PM (#155037) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Danny Kaye From: Susan A-R I missed him first time round. The television reception up here in the north has always been rugged at best, and much of his stuff seems to have played on NBC, which just didn't make it in. I did just recently see The Secret Life of Walter Midy, WOW! The flexibility of his voice/face/body was amazing. What a guy. |

29 Dec 99 - 12:29 AM (#155066) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Danny Kaye From: catspaw49 Could be an earlier version I suppose...but I really think its one of hers. Sylvia Fine was a premier wordsmith with the perfect mouthpiece for her contrivances. Spaw |

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only Danny Kaye fan around. The Court Jester and Inspector General are two of my favorite movies. I bought a copy of The Court Jester and forced my family to watch it with me one night. The kids had never seen it before and were absolutely entranced. He was surely one of a kind. 29 Dec 99 - 09:23 PM (#155429) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Danny Kaye From: Susan A-R Just discovered (through careful digging in my mess of a study) that there are two tongue twisters which I left out!! Here you go. Now Charlie is charry when choosing his cheeses And cheeses are challanged when Charlie arrives. When Charlie is charming and chooses a cheddar Then chills it and chips it and chopps in some chives (I may have this wrong, but that's what it sounds like) And Snobby Miss Norah is sniffing her snuff But the snuff has no sniff and it makes Norah sneeze When snide Alice Nortan ears Norah a sneezing She snappily snorts Norah's sneezing a breeze. Now I have to go out and visit someone with a vcr and bring the Court Jester. I have never seen it. Susan A-R

He, in animation and in voice, portrayed the character Seymour S. Sassafras, and he also provided the voices for Colonel Bunny and Antoine the caterpillar. It's my favorite Rankin-Bass special, largely on the strength of Mr. Kaye's performance. |

I got to go and buy a paper full of fish and chips, I got to go for don't you know I'm barely smacking me lips. Ow Ow Ow Ow it wet's me appetite, For I could go on eatin' fish and chips all night. 15 Apr 07 - 11:18 AM (#2025947) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Danny Kaye From: Stringsinger Danny Kaminsky born in Brooklyn, came to prominence in Moss Hart's "Lady In the Dark" with Gertrude Lawrence, one of the first music "books" that were original. Danny's big song was "Tschaikovsky" which brought him fame. Sylvia Fine was a comic lyric "genius" like Tom Lehrer. (I always wondered if "Lobachevsky" (sp?) was patterned after "Tschaikovsky".) "I'll never forget the morning that grandpa ate the awning To impress a pretty lady, who went for men that were shady." Sylvia Fine, I don't think, got the recognition that she deserved. I met him one time briefly at the Gate of Horn in Chicago when he came in to the dressing room to see Shoshana Damari (a legend in Israel). I noticed that he wore two different colored socks. Another Kaminsky, Sid Caesar, nee: Kaminsky. "Tubby The Tuba" a classic children's recording. His "git-gat-gittle" was a new kind of scat singing. He was adored in England. Frank Hamilton |

We listened to all my parents' '78s of Danny Kaye. My favorite was "Anatole of Paris". I think there was also a "Minnie the Moocher". We read the short biography of him we had over and over. We went to the theater and watched "On the Double" so often we had it completely memorized. We saw on tv and loved "The Inspector General" and made cartoons of the stories, adding some new developments of our own. The first movie I ever saw, at age four, was Hans Christian Anderson. Even very young children used to love The Court Jester. There is so much in it. The scene where he is hiding in the bedroom after the witch puts the spell on him and every time fingers are clicked he switches personalities...the wagon ride with the Captain when he plays a deaf old man...the several languages spoken fluently by Giacomo...the hilarious scene where he is being knighted...I could go on and on! Now I'm going to go look for a copy on DVD - the videotape wore out a long time ago. Thanks for this thread, it's brought back a lot of happy memories! Cheers, Quokka |

10 Mar 10 - 05:28 PM (#2861375) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Danny Kaye Songs From: Jim Dixon Danny Kaye did indeed record MINNIE THE MOOCHER – in April 1941, on Columbia 36582 (b/w LET'S NOT TALK ABOUT LOVE). I haven't heard the whole song, but I listened to a few samples. I also read some reviews and reports which called it a "signature piece" and a "spoof." He frequently performed this in concert and used it as an audience-participation piece. Where Cab Calloway sang his "Hi-de-hi-de-hi-de-hi" (etc.) in call-and-response fashion, with his band members supplying the responses, Kaye had the audience sing the responses. He then improvised more and more outlandish and complicated "scat" phrases, challenging his audience to repeat them. He even imitated other languages. I heard things that sounded vaguely like French, German, and Japanese, but I'm rather sure they were really gibberish. Even when he sang "Ouvrez la fenêtre" (French for "open the window") he didn't pronounce it correctly—he stretched "fenêtre" out to 4 syllables: "fe-ne-te-ra." I'm pretty sure he recorded it more than once. |

You must gather up the germs of the transcendental terms and plant them everywhere. You must lie among the daisies and discourse in idle phrases of your elevated state of mind: The meaning doesn't matter as it's only idle chatter of the transcendental kind. And everyone will say, as you go your mystic way, "If this young man expresses himself in terms too deep for me, Why, what a very cultivated kind of youth this kind of youth must be." That's the first verse. On the recording I had, Danny Kaye sang the second verse as written by G&S and then the third verse as above, except I heard the line as "Endeavor to be clever and commit yourself forever to a person on the fence." |
16 Aug 10 - 03:34 PM (#2966578) Subject: Lyr Add: LOBBY NUMBER (MANIC DEPRESSIVE PRESENTS) From: Jim Dixon In the sound-track listing for the film "Up in Arms" (1944) at IMDb.com there is this: * "Theater Lobby Number" Written by Sylvia Fine and Max Liebman Performed by Danny Kaye (Sylvia Fine was married to Danny Kaye.) On several albums, this is called LOBBY NUMBER (MANIC DEPRESSIVE PRESENTS). At ASCAP.com, it is called LOBBY NUMBER (FR UP IN ARMS). You can hear the whole song at YouTube, where it is called MANIC DEPRESSIVE FROM UP IN ARMS. Here is my transcription: Manic Depressive Pictures presents (lion roar) "Hello, Fresno, Goodbye" Produced by R. U. Manic And directed by Depressive Now you know the name of the picture and you'd like to see it— But no! Screenplay by Gluck, from a stage play by Musk, From a story by Blip, from a chapter by Ronk, From a sentence by Doaks, from a comma by Stokes, From an idea by Groaks, based on Joe Miller's Jokes. Now you know the name of the picture and who wrote it, And you'd still like to see it, hm? But no! Art direction, Finkelfluffen Theory, S Minerva Photography, Alonzo Teck Recorded sound by Needle... Upholstery by Zachary Knick-knackery by Thackeray Terpsichore by Dickery And Dickery by Doc. Now finally, finally at last comes the picture, And what do we see? The same old beautiful chorus girls! The opening scene is a ranch in Fresno, California. So what are they singing? "When it's cherry-blossom time in Orange, New Jersey, We'll make a peach of a pair. I know we cantaloupe, so honeydew be mine, And if—" Up from the gulch rides a hunk of man. He is our hero, cowboy Dan, A gallopin' yodelin' buckaroo. His horse, of course, is a baritone, too. "I've got them old wagon-wheels inside of me. Yeooh-hoo-hoo! I've got that old cactus in the hide of me. Yeooh-hoo-hoo! I've got that yeooh-hoo-hoo!" The girls are delighted to hear this, But where is our heroine? As the bell rings for lunch, We find our heroine in the corral, eating her heart out. She is Mary Schwann, Tap-dancing daughter of an American ... Who left her on the doorstep of an old English castle, Where she was found by Sir Basil Metabolism, who said: "By Jove, a girl baby! I shall raise her as me own daughter." Which he did. But she wants to tap-dance, And cowboy Dan, whom she met on the strip— And it was love at first sight— Wants to marry her so she can tap-dance, But she knows Sir Basil will never permit this, Never, never, never! (Crying sounds.) That's why she's eating her heart out, But through her tears, she is singing a happy little song, Because she is also a coloratura soprano. (Gibberish singing in the style of a coloratura soprano.) She is beside herself, her favorite position. "Oh, father, you must let me marry Cowboy Dan. He owns the biggest ranch in Texas: Bar None." "Bar none? That's the password of the FBI!" It can't be! No-no, yes-yes, no-no, yes-yes, No-no, yes-yes, No-no, yes-yes, It can't be, but it was! He rushes to Mary Schwann. "Mary Schwann, you must help me out. Can you tap out a message in code?" This is her big chance. Now she can tap-dance, which she does. But what has she done? She has betrayed her own father. But he isn't her father. He is Heinrich Von Schloopen Von—(German gibberish)— A dangerous German spy. "Stick up your hands, you dirty rat." The FBI finally catches the German spy. Dan and Mary are about to blend. You think the picture's about to end— But no! Who ever heard of a musical picture without Carmelita Pepita, The Bolivian bomb-a-shell? "I wish you would come with me to my little village in Bolivia. So peaceful there with the purple mountains, the lovely ... And the shining stars, And the little people who live so simple and quiet, And every night all they want to do is—" "Grab a partner, swing away ... Orange a day. Grab her by the teeth and swing her by the hair, And you will make a peach of a pair." ... So here we are back in Fresno, California, And this is where you came in, But do not fret, my friends. This is a picture that ends in the middle For the benefit of the people who came in, in the middle. This, this is the end! |
