Although I didn't get into folk music until the nineties, I really like the early revival singers. For me, this was a very interesting insight into that era, their outlooks, politics etc. as well as great footage of them plying their trade. |

02 Mar 19 - 03:08 AM (#3979791) Subject: RE: Philip Donnellan documentaries From: Jim Carroll Donnellan made some superb films using folk song - one of the very best (which was withdrawn by a panicky BBC) being 'The Irishmen' - an account of Navvies working on digging the Victoria Line, in London WE attended a public showing a year ago at the Dublin Trad-Fest - every bit as powerful as it was half a century earlier His two part 'Gone for a Soldier' potted history of the British Army, led to questions being asked in The House and calls for him to be imprisoned in The Tower Others, 'Before the Mast' (the Merchant Navy) and 'Passage West' left indelible memories and produced some of the finest of MacColl's songs - Tunnel Tigers, Farewell to Ireland, Shellback, Indeed, I Would.... ' At 'The Irishman' showing, Philip's daughter described how her father had to ship out copies of his films to friends in case the BBC pulped them, which, it appears, they did Philip, like his friend, Charles Parker, became a major embarrassment to the Media hierarchy; a great man and a pleasure to have met Jim Carroll |

Search for BBC's 1960s 'Irishmen' Ken Sweeney January 20 2010 5:00 AM IRISH railway workers in Britain who were featured in a 1960s BBC documentary are being tracked down by the broadcaster. 'The Irishmen' was an hour-long documentary special made by Philip Donnellan in 1965 following Irish railway workers in London. Irish immigrants described their horror at leaving home and travelling to urban Britain in the documentary. BBC management refused to broadcast 'The Irishmen' after it was completed in 1965. The daughter of acclaimed BBC documentary maker Donnellan, Philippa, who lives in Dublin, said her father was told at the time that the public "wouldn't be interested" in the work. "They [the BBC] thought the English public wouldn't understand it and wouldn't be interested in seeing a film about people working," she said. But Mr Donnellan remained working with the BBC to make more television documentaries on the lives of working-class people. Following his death in 1999, the BBC began a reappraisal of Mr Donnellan's work and the broadcaster will travel to Dublin this week to interview his widow Jill and Philippa. "I think the BBC are now recognising dad's work because times and attitudes have changed towards minority groups and the BBC are starting to see the historical and social importance of what he achieved," said Philippa. A special edition of the BBC programme 'Inside Out', on Philip Donnellan, will be broadcast next month. 05 Mar 19 - 03:01 PM (#3980382) Subject: RE: Philip Donnellan documentaries From: Jim Carroll Many, many thanks for that Guest We once had a very strange experience with the film 'The Irishmen', a copy of which we have owned since Philip gave it to us Our neighbour, Roisín White, used to organise a weekend visit of two fine Sean Nós singers, Josie Sean Jacn acDonnchada and Johnny Marin Leary, both from Carna in Connemara - glorious weekends in February where we could sit and listen to two great singers in comfort without the usual crowds Josie featured in the film, The Irishman as a link between Ireland and London and was used in the publicity when the film was made. Our local trad music fanatic publican heard we had the film and asked us to bring it to his bar which was fitted with a huge pull-down screen and projector - We agreed and took the film down to find an anxiously waiting small crowd - without the singers The publican put the film on and it had reached the scene where a young Josie was bidding farewell to his by tyhen long-dead parents, when Josie walked through the door to be confronted with himself sitting at the kitchen table with his father and mother He stopped at the door - poleaxed - he said it was if someone had hit him in the chest with a pick-handle Jim |

Possibly that was the one shown at Whitby in 2018 at one of Doc Rowe's workshops. I too would like to see it again (it was broadcast in 1981 and VCRs were in their infancy then) as near the begining I am seen replying to a chap, now a good friend of mine, who was making the claim that folk music wasn't political. |
