Stage Play: Joan & Jimmy (March 2019)

16 Feb 19 - 12:00 PM (#3977093)
Subject: Joan & Jimmy
From: Vic Smith

This was posted by Janet Russell on Facebook. I'm sure it will be of interest to some Yorkshire Mudcatters:-
Jim Woodland's play about Joan Littlewood and Ewan McColl (or Jimmy Miller) is on in Keighley at the Central Hall, Alice Street on the Wednesday 20th of March at 7.30pm. It's about a very specific time in their lives, before Joan went to stay in London, and before Jimmy became Ewan. There are songs! To book Keighley tickets see "Joan & Jimmy" on Eventbrite, (it would help us to know how many are coming beforehand) or come to Central Hall at 7pm to get tickets on the door £10 and £8 concessions.

The link for buying advance tickets is here.

Bugger! I have been roped in to work that night :-( I could have bused it to there and back easily.

Saw Janet at Skipton Folk Club a couple of weeks back though. She was very good.

Joan and Jimmy is now on tour. It's an excellent production, with a cast of four.

The principal characters are Ewan MacColl, Joan Littlewood, Jean Newlove and Gerry Raffles. Ewan battles against Gerry Raffles, his old persona Jimmy Miller and the Military Police too. The play ends as they set off to make their mark in London.

Jim Woodland wrote the excellent script and contributed the songs too, just as Ewan MacColl once did.

Qlooks interesting, but too far away to attend. Maybe something that could be put on at this year's Whitby Folk Week?
By the way, I nearly bypassed this thread: the thread title doesn't exactly give many clues. In rhe end, curiosity won!

Saw it at Bowes. Booked before I saw this. Worth seeing but not worth seeing twice.
Yes might be of interest at Whitby thought it isn't folky. There were no snippets of plays they did.

'the thread title doesn't exactly give many clues'
Yes. Its the title of the play.
(JHW not to blame for either)
NB I used to be a member but the robots seem to have thought better of that so now I'm a Guest. WTH

"Yes, it's the title of the play".
Yes, I realised that AFTER opening the thread (which I nearly didn't) - but when you only see the very short thread title, it maybe needs to send out a bit more of a message to get people to open the thread in the first place. Not blaming you, JHW!
Maybe something like "Joan and Jimmy- new play with music about Joan Lttlewood and Jimmy Miler" - could a kindly Mudelf possibly expand it?

HELLO
I AM ENTERING THIS THREAD RATHER LATE, BUT I HOPE THAT SOMEONE CAN PICK THIS ENQUIRY UP. I AM NOW AN AUTHOR, BUT IN THE DAYS WHEN I WAS STARTING OUT AS AN ACTOR, EARLY 1960S, I WORKED AT STRATFORD EAST.
MY LAST BOOK HAD A BIT ABOUT BBC MANCHESTER IN THE LATE 1930s, THE COMMUNIST PARTY IN MANCHESTER AT THAT TIME AND JOAN AND JIMMY.
I HAVE SINCE BEEN ENCOURAGED TO WRITE A BOOK ABOUT JOAN AND JIMMY, AND AM IN THE EARLY STAGES OF RESEARCH. FIRST, I WOULD LOVE TO READ THE PLAY BY JIM WOODLAND. I HAVE TRIED TO CONTACT BLAIZE COMMUNITY ARTS BUT RECEIVED NO REPLY.
IS THERE ANYONE IN YOUR FORUM WHO CAN INTRODUCE ME TO JIM, OR CAN POINT ME TOWARDS PEOPLE WHO HAVE MEMORIES OF THAT TIME OR WHERE I CAN BEGIN, BEARING IN MIND THAT THAT I AM LOCKED DOWN (OR "LOCKED UP") IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND. THANK YOU
GERRY

If you're writing a book about that period you'll no doubt want to look at the files the "thought police" had on them and the Theatre Workshop at the time which are, surprisingly, available at the National Archives under Ref's - KV 2/2175, KV 2/2176, KV 2/3178, KV 2/3179 and KV 2/3180.

Even more surprisingly, thanks to Covid 19, you can currently download them for free if you have an account. How long this will last, remains to be seen!

Gerry Harrison; you may be able to contact Jim Woodland through Settle Voices, where Jim's partner, Janet Russell, is the Musical Director.
