Viv Stanshall on John Peel!

With practised effort Mr Smeeton behaved outwardly as he knew he must and screwed his eyes Hong Kong to the distant figure microscopic and lifelike shimmering on the pitch. And all this merely token courtesy towards the catatonic Hubert, for in Smeetons mind the connotations of Ralph raffia Raffles, Sir Stamford 1781-1826, jostled, assembled, and howled for outlet.
"He boiled roly poly puddings in old socks", said Hubert dreamily. "But it was the chrysanthemums and Brasso that got to him".
In his creamy flannels Ralph lay atop the molehill like a poultice on a pulsing green boil.
Trembling to the wild scrabblings of the blind beast beneath his damp stomach.
"Gods teeth", he muttered, "if these thing bite one will be singing soprano". Viv Stanshall!!!

Absolute gems!!

A couple of years ago the BBC re-broadcast Rawlinson End together with a three-hour programme of reminiscences cum biography: English as Tuppence.

Last year Ki Longfellow published The Illustrated Vivian Stanshall - which I've not seen.

In the canyons of your mind
I will wander through your brain
To the ventricles of your heart, my dear
I'm in love with you again!
Across the mountains of your chest
I will stick a Union Jack
To the forest of your cheek, ah...
Through the holes in your string vest!

My darling
In my cardboard-colored dreams
Once again I hear your laugh
And I kiss, yes, I kiss your perfumed hair
The sweet essence of giraffe

And each time I hear your name
Oh, oh, oh, my, my... how... how it hurts!
In the wardrobe of my soul
In the section labeled "Shirts"

So the line is really:
"I will stick a Union Jack"?

For the last 50(?) years I've always believed it to be:
"I will sticker you with jam"

Ah well, yet another illusion shattered

I remember when Viv Stanshall used to sit in for John Peel on "Top Gear" (the radio programme) during the early seventies.

He had quite an eclectic choice of material, as I recall.

Including this one which was originally banned by The BBC

"A little bit near the knuckle" as Viv said...
