Lyr Req: Can anyone help with these two songs

Subject: Lyr Req: Can anyone help with these two songs
From: GUEST,Liamtho

Hi, I have been searching for two part remembered songs, the first is a joke song about a man asking three old men how they have lived so long - it includes lines like "Alcohol has never passed my lips nor smoke into my lungs, it's my recipe for long life and a way of staying young." The punch line was - " I've lived man and boy sir 23 years to the day".

The other song starts - "I was travelling through a time warp on my way to Venus and Mars and the verdant hills of earth were far behind. I was free and I was easy just an earth boy on the loose when a vision of perfection blew my mind."

Would love to perform these songs but I have searched everywhere for the lyrics to no avail - Google has never heard of them....

Thanks in advance...

Thanks for your response Helen but no it isn't there. These songs are around 50yrs old now - was hoping someone might remember them or even still sing them.

The northern hemisphere is still asleep, so you will probably get some useful suggestions when they wake up.

I don't recognise either of the songs, but my main interest is tunes & music rather than lyrics so I'm better at Googling than remembering lyrics.

There are a couple videos, but the lyrics are more understandable on this one.
A note on the video by Lisa Anne Kelly:
"The words to this song come from a science fiction story of the same name, written by Robert Heinlein. The song is by the character Rhysling, an aging blind spaceship engineer and legendary bard, who has traveled the solar system and is on his final journey home."

Don't know if it's from the same source but a song with this title featured in the very popular BBC radio serial, 'Journey into Space', sug, if I remember correctly, by Earthmen kidnapped and forced to work in mines on the Moon
Never missed an episode
Talk about a trip down memory lane !!

Jim, it seems the episodes are on YouTube. There's an episode called "The World in Peril" that features "the rebel song".

Both Journey into Space and the Heinlein story with the song have been broadcast on BBC4Ex several times over the last 10 years or so. It even has its own wikipedia page The Green Hills of Earth

Hi Liamtho,

I told you they would wake up soon. LOL

Meanwhile: the usual questions to help us track down your two songs.

Any info on who sang them, where you heard them e.g live performances, on cassette/vinyl, on the radio. Type of music, types of instruments etc etc. It might help to find the songs or jog someone's memory.

You do realise that Liamtho is an anagram of Hotmail and this is probably a wind up?

The space song reminds me of a funny Sci-Fi book I read some decades ago. The title and author escapes me, but cockroaches - the great survivors - were taking over the universe. It had something to do with Kurt Vonnegut. He didn't write it. I think it was a jokey take on some of his works. It will come to me. Maybe. Or it will be delivered to me by Googling when I have some more time this afternoon.

Good Onya, DtG! I never really know if it is or not, so it is worth investigating just to be nice.

This might be the book. Kilgore Trout: Venus on the Half Shell. A book about a man referred to as The Space Wanderer.

Wiki says this: a science fiction novel by American writer Philip José Farmer, writing pseudonymously as "Kilgore Trout," a fictional recurring character in many of the novels of Kurt Vonnegut.

Ahh a crossword buff like myself. I hadn't realised though....

My forenames are William Thomas - you should be clever enough to work it out for yourself

Helen, the songs are around 50 years old and heard on the radio. In the joke song the singer comes across three old men and asks each in turn their recipe for a long life. They each tell of their abstinence until the last one who says that he smokes and drinks and chases women. He is then asked how long he has lived and says 23 years to the day.

The other song had a country feel to it -

I was travelling through a time warp on the way to Venus and mars
And the verdant hills of earth were far behind
I was free and I was easy just an earth boy on the loose
When a vision of perfection blew my mind.

And materialised before my eyes a shape so divine
My heart beat like a kettle on a hob
I listened on with wonder as she told to me here name
It was Angeline De Colley Morhlipslob

Well I think that was the name and its about all I can remember

Well, Liamtho, that was what I thought your name must be - either Liam or William Thomas.

Sorry, we do get some requests for song or tune info sometimes from people who seem to enjoy sending us on a wild goose chase.

I still don't know the songs, but someone might.

Kilgore Trout

Apparently a subtle reference to Theodore Sturgeon and in the characterisation not very flattering.

Philip José Farmer was probably taking an equally unkind swipe at Vonnegut. What goes around ..................

I wonder where on the spectrum of Sturgeon's Rule** these digs come.

Liamtho, do you remember any of the lyrics to the other song. Who sang it, male/female/group, what instruments, what type of music, e.g."all types of music - country AND western"?

A man comes across three old men outside a pub

I remember one says -
Alcohol has never passed me lips nor smoke into me lungs
it's my recipe for long life and a way of staying young

And the third claims that he has drunk smokes and chased women all his life

Then the man says

Tell me just how long sir have you lived in this way

he replies with the punch line

I've lived man and boy sir 23 years to the day.

I think you've pretty much told it - 2 old men are asked about the secret of their long lives, tell of all the things they don't do, are asked and tell their ages (make an age up yourself, jokes can be folk processed) the third who looks even older tells how he enjoys all the things the others avoid.

The thought of jokes being folk processed reminds me of an HF holiday where they had evening entertainment from the guests and someone complained that he'd been telling the 'sick note' story (the barrel of bricks) long before Hoffnung made it famous . GH's retelling became almost the 'authorised version of that joke, though afterwards it was turned into a song too.
The same story, told in two distinct ways, both very funny

As you can see in the related thread, the song about longevity is "Recipe for Life" sung by Watt Nicoll

Johnny J: you said that there's a "related thread" about "Recipe for Life" by Watt Nicoll. What's the "related thread"? There's nothing (obvious, at least) in the recent threads and searching for that title gives no hits. Link, please??

Admittedly, this question is five years old. Nonetheless, I'm interested.

The collection is four of Watt Nicoll's CD's including the CD called Watt Is A Four Letter Word with the song Recipe for Life.

Lyrics for "Recipe for Life"

As promised, here is a transcription of the lyrics.
There may be one or two small errors as some of the words aren't too clear. However, it still makes sense......

In Drumnadrochit Village seated in the village square,
Come Hail, rain, or sunshine, you'll find the old men there.
While sharing with the tourists, they'll close their eyes and tell
Of the great tales of their childhood and their parents where they dwell.

They dwell, oh they dwell, oh they dwell me lads they dwell.
Oh, great tales of their childhood and their parents where they dwell.

The first old lad said "Since I was born some ninety years have gone".
"Oh tell me," said the tourist "Why have you lived so long?"
"I've never smoked nor drank, Sir, Whisky I have spurned,
You live to be a hundred when the simple things you learn."

"You learn, Aye You learn, You learn, me lads, you learn. You live to be a hundred once the simple things you learn."

Another nice old fellow just further up the bench
"In all of 97 years, I've never kissed a wench.
Alcohol has never passed my lips or smoke into me lungs
It's a recipe for long life and a way of staying young.

So young, so young, so young me lads, so young.
My recipe for long life and a way of staying young"

The third old man just cackled and shook a wizened head
"I never could remember how many maids I've had in bed
My glass is never empty and my pipe is always lit
That proves his recipe for life is just a load of shit.

Instrumental break

The tourist showed admiration and said he was impressed
"Beyond a shadow of a doubt, Sir, it's your way that's the best.
But tell me just how long that you've lived in this way?"

"Well, I've lived man and boy, Sir, 23 years to the day."

The day, the day, the day me lads, the day. Well, I've lived man and boy, Sir, 23 years to the day.."

There is a more toned-down verse from the third old man which was sung on the radio programme, as I said. As I recall, it goes something like this..

The third old man just laughed. He shook his head and gloated
"In all my years I can't recall how many girls I've courted
My glass is never empty and I enjoy a smoke
That proves his recipe for life is nothing but a joke..."

"A joke, a joke, a joke me lads a joke. That proves his recipe for life is nothing but a joke..."

So, you can sing whichever verse you like. According to taste and/or the company.... ;-)))
