Good Night Irene
Jerry Garcia band(aka Greatful Dead)

C D G D G C
Irene Good-night, Irene Good-night
C C7 F D
Good-night Irene, good-night Irene
C G Am G
I'll see, I'll see you in my dreams...

Last Saturday night I got married
We went and settled down
Now me and my wife are parted
I think I'll take a little walk downtown

Irene Good-night, Irene Good-night
Good-night Irene, good-night Irene
I'll see, I'll see you in my dreams...

Sometimes I live in the country
Sometimes I live in the town
Sometimes I take a fool notion
I think I'll jump in the river and drown

Irene Good-night, Irene Good-night
Good-night Irene, good-night Irene
I'll see, I'll see you in my dreams
I'll see, I'll see you in my dreams
I'll see, I'll see you in my dreams...

A favorite verse - "I love Irene, God knows I do; I'll lover her til' the day I die. But if she turns her back on me, I'll take Morphine and die."

I read that Leadbelly originally sang it as I'll GET (or KISS) you in my dreams. Is that possible?

Yes, Lenny, that's right (actually, what I heard was "I'll have you ..."). It got cleaned up so as not to shock the faint of heart.

My favorite parody verse:
What did the chicken
Say to the duck
You ain't good lookin"
But you sure can swim

Thanks to the wonderfully generous Joe Hickerson who provide me with a great tour of the Folklore centre at the Library of Congress, I was able to hear several versions of some Leadbelly songs where he sang different texts each time. He used the word "nigger" a lot when playing for black audiences (or when off his guard), as well as "cracker" and a few others I forget. His habit of calling all white people "Mr." (even Woody and Pete) infuriated the New Yorkers, but I doubt they knew much about well-honed protection devices. I'll bet Huddie did!

Brought back alot of memories. My father sang this to my mother when he had a bit to much and was heading to bed. I heard a french version that sounded good but can only make out a few words. Love to learn that one also.

Thanks again Steven

My favourite version is on Ry Cooder's "Chicken Skin Music" album. He sings "I'll get you in my dreams", as, on the version I've got, did Leadbelly. Also available by Frank Sinatra, for MoR freaks - the 1950's sheet music I have of the song has Sinatra on the cover.

"I'll get you" is how Alex Campbell always used to sing it, and that's good enough for me.

Hi hi, I heard this verse at a Bryan Bowers show.
"I took Irene to the zoo
To see what we could see
But when she saw what the elephant had
She wouldn't go home with me" Cheers
