30 Dec 99 - 10:38 PM (#155938) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Good night Irene From: Lenny I read that Leadbelly originally sang it as I'll GET (or KISS) you in my dreams. Is that possible? |
30 Dec 99 - 11:41 PM (#155957) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Good night Irene From: Gary T Yes, Lenny, that's right (actually, what I heard was "I'll have you ..."). It got cleaned up so as not to shock the faint of heart.
My favorite parody verse: |
31 Dec 99 - 12:31 AM (#155972) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Good night Irene From: Rick Fielding Thanks to the wonderfully generous Joe Hickerson who provide me with a great tour of the Folklore centre at the Library of Congress, I was able to hear several versions of some Leadbelly songs where he sang different texts each time. He used the word "nigger" a lot when playing for black audiences (or when off his guard), as well as "cracker" and a few others I forget. His habit of calling all white people "Mr." (even Woody and Pete) infuriated the New Yorkers, but I doubt they knew much about well-honed protection devices. I'll bet Huddie did! Rick |
01 Jan 00 - 08:58 AM (#156527) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Good night Irene From: Steven Brought back alot of memories. My father sang this to my mother when he had a bit to much and was heading to bed. I heard a french version that sounded good but can only make out a few words. Love to learn that one also. Thanks again Steven |
01 Jan 00 - 09:05 AM (#156531) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Good night Irene From: Alan Francis My favourite version is on Ry Cooder's "Chicken Skin Music" album. He sings "I'll get you in my dreams", as, on the version I've got, did Leadbelly. Also available by Frank Sinatra, for MoR freaks - the 1950's sheet music I have of the song has Sinatra on the cover. |
01 Jan 00 - 04:37 PM (#156692) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Good night Irene From: McGrath of Harlow "I'll get you" is how Alex Campbell always used to sing it, and that's good enough for me.
