This is about acting careers, but the explanations apply equally well to music, so it seems likely you'd get the same results.

I've always been a one-hit wonder. I sing one song, people hit me, I wonder why.
I'll get me coat.

If number 13 counts as a 'hit', then according to officialcharts.com he had two:

Don't Laugh At Me, and also Wisdom Of A Fool

I thought that Don't Let It Die was an excellent shout for Norman Smith, but I find that Oh, Babe, What Would You Say? reached number 4 in the UK.

A shame.

You mean, I'm never going to go above and beyond my bastardization of The Key of R?

Life isn't fair, and neither is show biz.

Isn't the real norm a no-hit wonder?

On the pop level, two songs stand out as a One Hit Wonder. "Ode to Billy Joe"
Also, "As Time Goes By" Nothing either of these songwriters wrote afterward never achieved the financial or public success.

Reminds me of Townes Van Zandt's modest quip, "I'll play ya a medley of my hit."
