I just read today that Derry songwriter Eamon Friel has died after a short illness. I don't think any of his lyrics are posted on Mudcat. Here is a concert video from 2012

I first met Eamon circa 1975, when he was teaching in a secondary school. He composed a musical which the students performed. In recent years, I've enjoyed his eclectic music programme on BBC Radio Ulster/Northern Ireland/Radio Foyle, particularly as he did his research and gave interesting background information about the recordings he presented.

Condolences to Caitlín and Colum. Caitlín has also been a colleague of mine; she did remedial teaching at an Irish(language)- medium secondary school.

I never met Eamon but have several of his CDs. Pat Tynan at Market Square Records alerted me to him and I'd always hoped one day to see him live and to try and bring him to Southport. His songs were well-written, well-observed and often quirky in the most likeable way. His gentle delivery and conversational style chimed with me.
I shall treasure his music always and lament the fact that we never got to shake hands and for me to say "I'm the biggest fan you never knew you had!"
Rest easy Eamon.
