BS: Why I dislike women's football...

It now means there is potentially twice as much bloody football coverage on the telly...!!!

The sport can only achieve true equality when it becomes combined into mixed men's and women's teams..
That should be the future accepted norm...

It might happen. In the meantime, in the interests of equality, you should decide which gender of footie should be allowed. Maybe by the toss of a coin...

The only time I watch soccer seems to be when the U.S. women's team is playing. While the women don't seem to be as fast and explosive as the men they do seem to play with a certain amount of finesse and judging from the U.S./Spain match the other day, no lack of physicality.

Football's very popular.

I don't begrudge anyone their innocent pleasures, however I really don't agree with Gary Lineker getting paid 1.7 million of public money for what he does.

Better than women getting cauliflower ears playing rugby, but (as I said in verse here ) I'm glad netball - devised as a (largely) non-contact sport for the ladies - is making a big comeback; or table tennis - where, unlike tennis, a lady can reach a high level without getting bulging veins and muscles on her racket arm. (By the way, watching the BBC news, I just heard the Dalai Lama say that he does not mind a female successor, as long as she is good looking!)

AS much as I am indifferent to any game played with a round ball,
I saw one of the best nasty vicious fouls for years on the news a few days ago.
Proper 'accidental' high kick aimed at the head..
For a moment it was like the thrill of real 1960s mud and blood football again...

when we won the cup... aahhh

It was a foul from a women's football match...

Well done women.. the spirit of authentic football lives on...

That foul was a split second in ninety minutes committed by one person out of 22. You could have tried to enjoy the other 89.9999 minutes of spirit and skill. Depends what you want, really. There's always EastEnders.

Steve - I suppose what I want really is rugby... and sumo wrestling...

Women's rugby is coming along,
but it's a sport where the physical disparity between men and women
may be too much for mixed sex teams to be feasible...???

Though rugby teams do have positions for smaller men...

But if schools and local clubs started boys and playing together in mixed teams
right from the get go,
maybe that would sow the seeds for a next generation that takes it for granted as the norm...???
Team selection based on individual skill and enthusiasm for the sport
rather than gender...
Footballers are all round athletes, and the physical differences betwen men and women
should not be as significant as in other sports like rugby and sumo..

btw.. the next sumo tournement starts in July..
and women's sumo does exist at local grass roots level...

Oneca again its this Brexit business.

I remember a time when a football wass a big heavy leather thing. When it got wet, which was most of the year - it would knock anyone less than fourteen stone flying. Footballers like Jack Charlton, Pete Storey, Andy Gray, billy Bremner....they did theses sliding tackles...now that WAS football - not all these dainty little foreign buggers skipping about.

And as for women, they wouldn't have survived the pie van and the hot tea, laced with nitric acid.

It won't be long before politicians will notice their popularity and have to have a favourite women's team. Or if your are a Boris, a favourite woman..............

who you can argue with.

And a colleague who refereed women's games did tell of some of the women he had to ban. Physicality you ask? Not unknown.

My dad used to play hockey (by which I mean hockey, not ice hockey), and they used to have mixed male-and-female teams. I don't know if they still do. I don't think it would work in football (=soccer), not unless the officials could rein in some of the physicality.

A few years ago I took my daughter to Womad and spent so much I should have had a sponsor's marquee erected. Shortly after we went to see Man City women play Chelsea women at Staines FC's ground. Entrance couldn't have been more than a fiver (I think it was £3), and kids get in for nowt, a burger and a brew cost £2.50. And the football was of a high standard.

And if we'd have brought a ball, City's players would have signed it (OK, I knew our reserve goalkeeper, but it was a friendly atmosphere).

If you like footy (and, fair enough, it's not the superior 13-a-side code), women's football is well worth watching, and won't break the bank.

As a welcome side attraction, to me anyway, U.S. captain Megan Rapinoe has got President Racist Nitwit's nose out of joint when some time ago she responded to a reporter's question that she would not go to the f______ White House in the event of a U.S. victory. Who could turn down a trip to Trump's White House for room temperature, fast-food death burgers and a photo-op with the Groper in Chief? A lot of championship teams could, it turns out.

I am not a fan of football, whatever gender the players. But I recommend a project called No Petticoats here by Louise Jordan, which includes a section on women footballers during the first world war. I have copied an extract below:

===

Women Footballers
Whilst researching individual women I was drawn to the stories of women footballers such as Lily Parr, Jennie Morgan and Bella Raey. Collectively, women footballers of the Great War had a phenomenal impact on the lives of their communities and their country. When the FA suspended men’s football teams from competing in 1915 it was women who kept the sport alive. Encouraged to play during breaks by factory owners to build morale, women munitionettes’ teams organised fundraising matches. These women footballers raised thousands (millions in today’s money) for POW and soldier’s charities, only for women’s football to be banned by the FA for an incredible fifty years (1921 -1971).

The women's game was banned from club grounds in 1921 because it was pulling huge crowds compared to the men's game.

They tried to claim that it was because it wasn't suitable for ladies to play but, in my opinion, as an ex women's league player, it was pure jealousy on the part of the professional game.

Without proper grounds to play in women's football was relegated to the local recreation pitches and crowds dwindled. It has only really revived in the last 30 years.

it was pure jealousy on the part of the professional game.

because the men at war in WW1 - the women took up the challenge of entertaining (?) the public and it was virtually the only option around. Men returning needed a job and football was a good second income. Women had to look after the children. It was the culture then.

But yes, it was a form of jealousy - money.

And there were plenty of single women who lost out in the race to find a husband - even one with a wooden leg (eg)!

As for Glastonbury on the telly as well, why not? In my now 87 years I have never had cause to watch any women`s football games. This despite the fact that both my Mother (Cissy Smith) and her twin sister (Florrie Smith) b.1901 loved the game and being club members of The Dumfries Ladies Eleven used to train in Dumfries at their Palmerston Park ground during and after the 1914/18 war. My Mum (inside right) would always mention having scored a goal against the famous Dick Kerr French team, but I just wish now that I had paid more attention to all the talk and happenings of that period. It seems that they both went to Carlisle to work at the vast munitions factory for the then war effort where evidently other girls were keen too on playing and watching the women`s game.

I certainly can recall the shock of 1950 mens soccer World Cup when the part-timers from the USA knocked England out, we heard it all live on the radio and yes....still shocks!

However, the important ladies game tonight, Tues 2nd - USA v England I will be watching, especially for my Mum in her rightful Queen of the South position at inside right.

Hard luck England :-(

You are right though, Dan. I thought the USA outplayed us. As a non-football afficionado, I can honestly say it was one of the most dramatic games I have seen. Whether that was good or bad, I just don't know. But it was certainly exciting :-)

The offside call was clearly correct. The penalty decision was as soft as can be and I was (almost) glad it didn't go in. Long balls won't wash with a team as good as the US. Nine times out of ten you just lose possession, and they are a killer team in possession. And when they lose the ball they fight like tigers to get it back. I didn't see that energy from us. Loose passes lose matches. Well done, the US ladies!

I'm sure Phil Neville just said "we went down to 10 men"..?

Then one of the presenters said the England (not the USA) team wanted to be "bad-ass women"..?

I watched about 20 minutes, after Today at Wimbledon, and certainly saw some bad passing women.

Anyway, at least Alf Ramsey's English team won THE World Cup the day Yours Truly was born, in Saint Mary's Manchester - http://walkaboutsverse.blogspot.com/

He did say that. As for me, I found myself saying to Mrs Steve things like "England need to get more men in the box..." But we're all getting there, including me and Phil (Bury and Radcliffe lads that we are). Kudos to the women/girls/ladies. They are changing our sporting culture for the good, which is what really matters.

Probably the EEC banned them.

True story:

Not sure if he bothers now but, a few years ago, Jack Charlton started posting on Facebook saying, e.g., how much he liked fly fishing and disliked women's football.

Then one day I noticed he'd posted a picture of the World Cup winning team - saying something like who's the handsome tall chap in the middle.

I added, as above, that I was actually born the day he helped us win the World Cup and, despite being born with a club foot, managed to play A-grade juniors in Sydney, Australia.

He replied with "Alf Ramsey used to say I was born with 2 club feet!"

hi

I have no argument about the result of the game. Us Women were the better side with some vey strong players; The were well drilled and their defence was better than some teams I saw in the Premier league
this year !!! Including Man United !!

It was an entertaining game and although Us were dominant, there were a few near shocks from a very hard working England side.

cheers

Football, cricket, it's 2019...

There's no good reason such divisive male & female teams can't be integrated at all amateur and pro levels...
Even if some rules might need to be modified..

The better women will gain opportunities,
the weaker men will drop off...

It's only the sports where huge brute male strength is of vital importance,
that may take longer, or never become viable, for women to be included in teams.

But where there's a will...???

Anyone for tennis, PFR?!

Very different - if women had to compete against men, zero would be able to make a living from it. So, in order to have equal prize money at Wimbledon, men are now discriminated against - having to play the game better for longer.

And, if someone counters with "but women look better on the court", surely that would be a sexist argument.

In the pro tournaments sport,
there are no weight, height, or age divisions...

A small mouse of a man can fight a colossal elephantine monster...
The winner can not be predicted...

I'd love to see that applied to other sports,
and it could pave the way for very entertaining mixed male/female matches...

Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football...
From: Allan Conn

The vast bulk of tournaments are the best out of 3 sets for both men and women. The grand slam tournaments are an exception rather than the rule. It came about through tradition and the idea years ago that women were somehow incapable of playing the five sets rather than the three which of course is a nonsense. If there was to be a coming together of that it wouldn't be women playing 5 sets though it would be men playing 3 - and there has been some pressure for that from the organisers and TV schedulers etc. As Al says longer games are not necessarily the best or a bigger attraction anyway. Especially in the earlier rounds where they may be more one sided. Is it really more exciting to watch a 6-2 6-1 6-2 match than it would be to watch a 6-2 6-1 match??? Plus we are lucky with the men's game at the moment in that in Federer, Nadal and Djokavic we have three all time greats playing at the same time and they are all good to watch. That isn't always the case where the men's game can sometimes simply be a big serving competition. This year argaubly the biggest attraction and biggest talking point is over a 15 year old lassie and not Nadal or Federer.

their complaints about "discrimination against men"

Now if you were talking about class inequality and pay,
and not so fixated on gender,
that might be a more meaningful conversation...????

Equally, I don't like to see males clashing heads in football matches or males, in the army, at front lines. Equally. Get it? And any morality deficit arises because we aren't very good at stopping wars from happening. As for the clashing of heads, many human endeavours carry some risk. The other day I saw an old lady's head clash with the floor as she fell down an escalator in M&S. Maybe we should make all women wear crash helmets when they go shopping. Better still, confine them to the house, where they can comfort themselves with fond memories of all that suckling they did.

The old lady was fine, by the way. She was comforted by a little gathering of women shopworkers who found a chair for her and brought her a cup of tea. Imagine: women in a workplace! And some of them looked young enough to be at home suckling!
