Just heard on the radio whilst coming home on a bus that Monty Python star Terry Jones passed away last night aged 77, his family were with him at the time.

An absolute genius writer and actor, RIP Terry.

he always seemed like a genuinely good guy. he directed 'life of brian' - a great film he could be very proud of.

A legend who knew a very naughty boy when he saw one. A bit like me mum...

Really, so much sprang from the fertile mind of Terry Jones which gave immense pleasure to me and countless others, that I can only say
"Thank You, Mr. Jones! RIP"

(I did like this quote from John Cleese:
"I shall remember him as Mr Creosote. He is so funny in it and it's one of the funniest things we did. So I shall think of him exploding.")

On the radio in Germany they finished the obit with "Always look on the bright side of life"!

From a lovely tribute by his friend Steve Coogan in the Guardian:

"Forget the monarchy and the institutions. It’s people like Terry Jones who make me proud to be British.”

Couldn't have said it better meself!

I have seen a lot of travel documentaries from Michael Palin but only one from Terry Jones, RIP, which I thought he did very well; however, I don't like Monty Python, frankly.

SS, Amen to that. I am very rarely proud to be British, but Python is one of our superior creations.

... and the memorials say
that he desperately missed his native Wales.

Not just a funny man, He wrote some very subtle little fables. I remember at a songwriting workshop at a festival Anne Lister told us one of these from a book of his and invited us to think about it as making a song, and I was prompted to do so:

A Sailor's Dream
A sailor, a sailor so far from his home
On a misty green island was cast all alone.
And he built him a fire, and he built him a boat
Home again, home again, someday I'll float
But he never came home, no he never came homw,
He never came home from the sea.

For in searching the island he found a great tree,
It was tall as a mast on his ship on the sea.
So this sailorman climbed, as a sailor would do.
High over the island where the purple fruit grew.
"Will I eat of the fruit, will I eat of the fruit,
Yes, I'll eat of the fruit of the tree.

And down from the tree and so eager to eat,
And the rind it was bitter, but the fruit it was sweet.
And he fellin a sleep and he fell in a dream,

And he dreamed he was home again, over the sea.
And it carried him home, yes it carried him home,
It carried him home from the sea.

And he turned from the ocean, when he ate of the tree.
And he knew he was dreaming, as he dreamed he was free.
He was hime once again, with his wife, far away
Andhe lay in her arms till the cock crowed for day,
He was home once again, he was home once again,
He was home once again from the sea.

And the weeks and the years and his life passed. Away
And he dreamed and he dreamed, and the ships sailed on by.
Till at last a boat landed from a ship by the shore,
And they found him there sleeping, and they carried him aboard
And they carried him home, yes they carried him home,
Yes they carried him home from the sea.

Oh but where are my children, and where is my young wife?
Have I come home to strangers at the close of my life?
So far from my island, so far from the tree,
That carried me sleeping across the dark sea.
Yes it carried me home, yes it carried me home,
It carried me home from the sea.

(She sings)
Oh but where's that dark sailor, so bold and so smart
I have held for a lifetime so dep in my heart?
Each night he came to me on the waters so wide -
And now who's this cold stranger who lies by my side?
No, he never came hime, no he never came home,
He never came home from the sea.

Do we (they) ever come home, do we (they) ever come home,
Do we (they) ever come home from the sea?

(Sorry about that break there in the third verse.)

I've always been fond of that song. Thanks to Terry Jones, unbeknownst to him.

No one was better at playing frumpy English housewives.
