25 Jan 20 - 06:06 AM (#4030086) Subject: Terry Silver (Leadfingers) From: GUEST,moira Terry's family has now started to make public about His accident o from them. FOR ANYONE WHO KNOWS TERRY SILVER - it is now in the public arena that Terry had a terrible accident (no-one's fault) when his car broke down, and a lorry hit or clipped his car while Terry was in front of his car on the hard shoulder. I'm posting this as originally the family asked for nothing to be posted on social media, so many of Terry's friends and acquaintences won't know. However, his sister-in-law has just posted this update on Terry's facebook page which will update everyone: "There are so many of you wishing Terry well. I've decided the easiest way to keep you all informed is to post updates on Terry's timeline. At present he is on Trauma Ward B5 in the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. Physically he is improving and managed to sit out of bed for a short while today and also walk with a walker in the ward. Amazing considering his injuries. There are plans, when he is well enough, to transfer him to The Hillingdon Hospital in Uxbridge but not yet. We will see him this weekend and report next week." |

27 Jan 20 - 02:11 PM (#4030576) Subject: RE: Terry Silver (Leadfingers) From: GUEST,jacqui.c Just found this from Moira Craig on Terry’s Facebook page. I’m sure she won’t mind me reposting. Just getting round to writing about our visit. and yes, we got a bit lost in the hospital too. Trauma ward 5b, not unit! we were so happy to see him in good spirits and still having a healthy appetite. He is gets tired very easily and is still in some pain and discomfort but his sense of humour is intact. They are weaning him off his oxygen ( his breathing was affected due to his chest damage and he slowly mobilising. No idea yet about when he might be move closer to home. if you are planning to visit please note that parking is a nightmare and we finally found a side street not far away which gives you two hours free. I took a photograph of Terry on my phone which he said I can post but I emailed it to myself and it hasn't turned up yet. xx |
27 Jan 20 - 03:01 PM (#4030586) Subject: RE: Terry Silver (Leadfingers) From: GUEST,henryp The motorway hard shoulder is a dangerous place to be. But the Panorama programme tonight is concerned with "smart motorways" where the hard shoulder is used as an additional running lane. In that case, there are only occasional lay-bys to offer refuge from moving vehicles. |
27 Jan 20 - 03:32 PM (#4030597) Subject: RE: Terry Silver (Leadfingers) From: John MacKenzie I have only driven on a "Smart" motorway once, and it scared the bejazus out of me, never again. I shall avoid them at all costs. |
27 Jan 20 - 04:20 PM (#4030610) Subject: RE: Terry Silver (Leadfingers) From: Richard Mellish So-called "smart" motorways are an invention of the Devil and a serious misnomer; but the account of Terry's accident implies a normal motorway with a proper hard shoulder where people should be safe from passing vehicles, unless a driver strays into the shoulder. |
28 Jan 20 - 04:37 AM (#4030709) Subject: RE: Terry Silver (Leadfingers) From: Mr Red The info I was given was that Terry's clutch went and by the time the car stopped not all of the back was clear of lane 1. The only thing Terry could have done was to stand over the barrier, but maybe he was assessing the problem and the lorry came by pretty much immediately. He managed to get out of the car safely, obviously. No mean feat given the circumstances. Any news of the banjo? |

He has little or no interest in music now and his memory is not great due to the brain damage from the accident.. He is living in a sheltered accommodation apartment in Newark near his brother and sister in law. They say he seems settled and happy enough but he doesn't use his phone or laptop much as he gets confused about how to use it. 22 Feb 21 - 10:10 AM (#4094277) Subject: RE: Terry Silver (Leadfingers)-Jan 2020 accident From: Stilly River Sage Recovering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) takes a LONG time. And it isn't just a matter of the brain reaching one point and stopping healing, the brain will continue to improve slowly over time. The process is incredibly frustrating for the individual involved because they know what they used to be able to do and can't do it now (or not very well). At this point his body has healed, and now the work can really start on the brain part of it. That said, if friends who are musicians visit him, don't avoid the music because Terry can't perform perfectly now. Gently offer to include it as part of the visit because he used to love it and may find another avenue to being musical again. Share a new song you're learning, sing acapella, etc. And who knows, those pathways in the brain may help him improve more once they are triggered. My best friend here in Texas was a pedestrian in a parking lot hit by a young woman driving into the space way too fast - Susie was thrown a distance and landed on her head and also had a shattered hip. She has come back a very long way (this happened 9 years ago and she spent 4 months in the hospital and rehab), and it has involved treating not just her physical health but her mental health because it was frustrating to not be able to do things. She is an artist and the fine motor skills have gradually returned to some degree. Not like before, but she can do some of it. The biggest problem she has, as does another friend who suffered a TBI when he was in college (he's nearly 60 now) is that she loses things. All. Of. The. Time. Short term memory sucks. We tried setting up a system with bright colored bowls on the counter where she would leave her hearing aid and her car keys (yes, she can drive and made sure she could pass the driving test before she renewed her license) but the family didn't pay attention when they came through and the bowl ended up moved or hidden or used for something else. If there is a plan to help then everyone needs to be on board with it. I haven't seen my friend since the COVID stuff started last. I need to give her back the cane she loaned me for my recovery from knee surgery last year at this time. After deciding her house was too much work she lived with family for a while, and last year she moved to a senior apartment where she lives independently but eats in a communal setting. It sounds like Terry is in a similar situation, so during COVID visits are rare and precious. Don't try to cram in the music as part of the visit, maybe share a favorite song or CD or file for his computer along with flowers or a food gift. A year out from that injury is still early days for him and his friends can help him (please listen to what he asks for - don't assume anything - he will know what he wants and needs now). |

Look at Jerry Garcia, after his coma. He had to completely relearn to play the guitar. Chet Baker had to relearn the trumpet after a vicious beating - took him 8 years, but he got there. Baby steps. |

I wish Terry as complete a recovery as possible. His legendary stubbornness will help him in his battle as will patience - he must have enormous reserves of patience as he was never one to squander it on the likes of us! Get well as soon as you can old mate! Gaffer |

20 Mar 21 - 05:39 AM (#4098472) Subject: RE: Review: terry silver From: GUEST,henryp There is a thread; Subject: RE: Terry Silver (Leadfingers) From: gnu Date: 21 Feb 21 - 07:11 PM Re Terry Silver, Leadfingers: Moira Craig : Hi Sally, Terry has basically recovered well although his fine motor skills are not great and he isn't playing his instruments now. It's very sad when you consider he was out nearly every night before the accident. Xx · Reply · 1h |

21 Mar 21 - 06:07 AM (#4098618) Subject: RE: Terry Silver (Leadfingers)-Jan 2020 accident From: guitaaress I worked with Terry for years during the 70s and early eighties. I've known him since the sixties and The Coach and Horses in High Wycombe. We were really good friends until I left UK for foreign lands. Should any of you meet up with Terry pleas tell him I think of him often and still consider him a good and trusted friend. Love him like a brother. Just say Crown Pishill and The Drover. I'm sure it will jog his memory. Just praying to the heavens for his full recovery. |
22 Mar 21 - 01:08 PM (#4098753) Subject: RE: Terry Silver (Leadfingers)-Jan 2020 accident From: Stilly River Sage I spoke with my friend who had the severe head injury and she asked me to pass along a tip on something she found helpful. There is a medication in the US called Armodafinil that she found particularly helpful in treating some of the impact of the brain injury. Online there is a description: Armodafinil is currently FDA-approved to treat excessive daytime sleepiness associated with obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and shift work disorder. It is commonly used off-label to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, chronic fatigue syndrome, and major depressive disorder. I'm guessing her use is "off-label." And she also said that a test to determine if she's getting enough Vitamin D helped because she's getting supplemental now. Both of these things have helped clear some of the fog the injury caused. Each case is different, so this is just one avenue to explore. |
22 Mar 21 - 03:24 PM (#4098767) Subject: RE: Terry Silver (Leadfingers)-Jan 2020 accident From: Felipa Silly River Sage - He probably should get vitamin D supplement anyway due to age and amount of time spent indoors. That would apply to many of us. |

He is about the same as Moira has reported and seems to be staying as he is. Though he can still play his whistle and sing a cappella, he has no interest in having anyone hook him up with online Zoom Room sings. Some of it might be accessibility to where he is, as he would need a friend as an internet guide, but it just may be he would rather just watch the tube instead. We talk of old memories and shared adventures on both sides of the pond and have a good chat, thanks to paying extra each month for unlimited overseas calls. I hope someone has posted his phone # and address. I am sure he would like to hear from you. |
