Lisa Null shared this on Facebook and asked me to share it to Mudcat. The link includes a whole slew of soundfiles for Gribble, Lusk and York, African American string band musicians from Warren Co., Tenn, plus a very interesting, in depth essay.

Gribble, Lusk and York Black String band, 1940s, Tennessee.

This is great stuff, I can see I'll be spending some time with it! Thanks.

Hearing these is very fascinating. Very little black string band music was ever recorded, despite there being recordings of, observers at the time noted a flouring black string bands up until about the 1940s, where they became increasingly uncommon.

Anyone who wants to read more about it should read Charles Wolfe, “Rural Black String Band Music”

Seems like a shame to me that four songs at the end appear to be unknown. Anyone recognize them?
