Booklet to ‘The Electric Muse‘ 1975 set?

I’ve had the 1975 Transatlantic/Island 4LP set ‘The Electric Muse: The Story of Folk Into Rock’ for a while*, but only recently learned that it was released with a booklet, which my copy sadly lacks.

https://www.discogs.com/Various-Electric-Muse-The-Story-Of-Folk-Into-Rock/release/1884922

Does anyone know of, or have, a scan of the booklet? I’ve heard great things about it, and would love to read it without having to buy a second copy of the boxed set...

Many thanks for any/all offers or pointers!!

(*I can pinpoint the acquisition with unusual accuracy - I got it from The Little Record Shop in Tottenham, on the morning of the Euro 2016 final - having had the curious experience of chaperoning Japanese experimental music magus Keiji Haino on a vinyl buying expedition)

Would scan it if it wasn't falling apart thanks to dodgy binding- hardly a booklet - it's a near 200 page book
Let me know if you continue to have problems, though I have little respect for it as a source of information
Very much of its time in my opinion

Ah, thanks John, that’s handy - from a bit of extra Googling, I now grasp the possibility that there are two documents - a booklet that featured as an insert to the LP boxes set (with a black and white cover, and possibly 20-30 pages in length), and a 170+ page ‘proper’ book published as a tie-in to the vinyl.

Is this the one that you’ve got?

In terms of your lack of respect for it - is it badly written or researched? Too airy-fairy?

Saw the reference to the great Keiji Haino above... did you play him the albums? The field is always wide open...

I could scan the album's booklet (13 text pages plus 7 pages with graphics that I'd skip) whenever I'm back in my university office; there is no A3 scanner at home. It may be on the weekend but I won't promise anything.

I found my copy of The Electric Muse at the end of the 1970s when I went for a haircut into a shop on the Universität Hamburg campus that had a barber in front and a second hand record shop in the back.

Bookfinder.com search on the larger book gives a number of sources. There was one result under "Various" that was the discs, but it doesn't indicate whether the booklet is in with the vinyl.

Reinhard, at this point in time you could use a regular camera or a phone camera to get each page photographed (jpg or tif) and assemble it into a PDF.

I second SRS, there are even some free tools like Scan Tailor that an help you assemble the pictures into a nicer-looking PDF

Reinhard, that's an exceptionally kind offer, thank you. I am totally beholden to your own convenience - in relation to SRS's comment, there's a very good Microsoft app - Office Eye - which frames and aligns photos of individual pages to form together into PDFs.

Roderick - Haino-San loves folk music, and is exceptionally knowledgeable and 'well-listened'

Don’t know if it’s the same but I picked up a 3 CD set, the “New Electric Muse” several years ago which also came with a booklet. The label on it says that it cost me the princely sum of £3 so it might be worth looking out for as an alternative to just the booklet.

Just to be clear, what I have released into the world (above) is the accompanying 182-page book published at the same time as the 4-LP set. Written by the compilers of the set - who also compiled the track-by track exposition, to which Reinhard points to (above) - none of that detail is in the book.

...and a further search of my files reveals - the complete booklet that came with the set! Thanks to a very old friend many years ago who not only converted the LP to digital files, but did all the hard yards with his scanner....

Here it is:

Thank you Hagman! The booklet scan is a bit large at 175MB though and is images only. I've reduced it to 4.4MB throwing away the album pictures, and ran it through an OCR scan which added selectable text to allow copy & paste.

The new version is at Electric Muse booklet.

So, do people rate this book highly? Of all the books I’ve read on roots music, I found this one a bit heavy going (the full length book, that is). Possibly, it majored on a few bands that weren’t that high up on my personal list of favourites.

The Electric Muse Revisited: The Story of Folk into Rock and Beyond - Published on 27th May 2021

Karl Dallas, Robin Denselow, Dave Laing & Robert Shelton

Folk music has been evolving and adapting for centuries, but in the 1960s and 70s came an extraordinary period of change and innovation. Rock musicians borrowed from traditional songs, while folk musicians re-worked ancient ballads using electric guitars and drum kits. From Dylan to Fairport Convention, Richard Thompson and Steeleye Span, the fusion of old and contemporary created a powerful new style: folk-rock. Since then, new and experimental folk fusions have continued, involving anything from rap to electronica.

First published in 1975, at the height of the folk-rock boom, the critically acclaimed Electric Muse chronicled the story of the folk movement, from roots to revival. With new chapters on the eras of Eliza Carthy, Billy Bragg, June Tabor, Bellowhead, Sam Lee, Stick In The Wheel and others, and featuring new interviews and photographs, this edition brings the fascinating narrative up to date.

As in 1975, The Electric Muse Revisited is published simultaneously with a new album set of the same title, on Good Deeds Music.

I am a bit late to this thread, but would love it if someone could reup the booklet to the 1975 Electric Muse. I had the original set of LPs but the booklet is long gone and I miss it.

Reinhart, thankyou so much for your quick reply, I really appreciate it. I had looked for this for quite a long time.
