Hello. I am looking for the origins of an old Scots song that my Grandad used to sing to me when I was a young lad. Here are the words:

Gang awa',
Bonny laddie (lassie) gang awa'
There's not a loch ness monster there ava'
For it's only Auld MacDougal
Who's awa' tae Auchenschugle
Gang awa', bonny laddie (lassie)
Gang awa'.

This is the whole song as I know it. Apparently he had heard this on the radio when he was a a young lad, also. Does anyone know this, or something like it?

Gang Awa' (The Loch Ness Monster song)

I can't find a recording online but could it have been "Loch Ness Monster" by Andy Stewart? (link)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sq-T-3aTWs This is the Hall & MacGregor song. Doesn't seem to fit the description

The one reference to it I've found was on another site from a post in 2012. It asks basically the same question posed by the OP. No joy at this end.

Sounds like the sort of thing Ewan MacVicar would know about.

Sorry, I ken it not. Auchenshuggle brands it as Glasgow, music hall I should say.

Will Fyffe, Harry lauder.... pre 40's Ewan is spot on. Though it may have been a "self composition" roughly based on "Sailors hornpipe", there used to be loads of them in circulation.
