Watching one of those Battle of Britain dvds on the Yesterday Channel they had one incident when the pilots sang "Bring Back My Bomber To Me" as the Spitfires, Hurricanes and Lancs took off on yet another sorty to meet the invading Germans. Does anyone know the full words? Cheers.

From A Rather English Marriage by Angela Lambert:

My bomber came down in the ocean,
My bomber was lost in the sea,
Where it lies I just haven't a notion;
Oh bring back my bomber to me

Bring back, bring back,
Oh bring back my bomber to me, to me...

FRom C. H. Ward-Jackson's "Airman's Song Book":

"A pretty little bomber song sung by 175 and other squadrons in 1942 to the tune of 'My Bonnie.'

BRING BACK MY BOMBER AND ME

One night as I lay on my pillow,
My batman awoke me and said,
"I say, there are ships in the channel,
But there's bags of black cloud overhead."

Bring back, bring back, oh, bring back my bomber and me, and me,
Bring back, bring back, oh, bring back my bomber and me.

So I climbed in my old heavy bomber,
And I took off right dead into wind,
And I searched the whole of the Channel,
But not a damn ship could I find.

So I turned round and headed for England,
Just thinking of coffee and bed,
The Controller said, "How cone you missed them?"
And I leave you to guess what I said.

From The Fleet Air Arm Song Book, "The Stringbag Song" [For the background, see Wikipedia, "Fairey Swordfish"]:

My Stringbag flies over the ocean,
My Stringbag flies over the sea.
If it weren’t for King George’s Swordfish,
Where the hell would the Royal Navy be?

CHORUS:

Stringbag, Stringbag,
Oh, bring back my Stringbag to me, to me,
Stringbag, Stringbag,
Oh, bring back my Stringbag to me.

At Taranto and chase of the Bismark,
In the battle of Cape Matapan,
'Twas the fish from the Swordfish that fixed 'em,
And those who could run, how they ran!

Now the science of dropping torpedoes
Is taught at R.N.A.S. Crail,
Where the instruction's so good that pupils
With the Swordfish aren't likely to fail.

No doubt when we get Barracudas.
The Swordfish's day will be done,
So remember, 'twas this kite that fixed 'em,
And gave them their place in the sun !

And I could swear I once heard "My [type of WW2 plane] lies under the ocean..."

Just an FYI, there is a stanza missing.

"The Stringbag relies on her Peggy,
The modified Taurus aint sound.
So the Swordfish flies off on her mission,
And the Albacore stays on the ground.

The Fairey Swordfish used a Bristol Pegasus engine, while it's intended replacement the Fairey Albacore used a modified Bristol engine, which was lamented as being unreliable and mechanically complicated. In reality, the engine was perfectly adequate to the task, and put out almost twice the power of the Bristol Pegasus, but the albacore was such a heavier plane, that the increased power did not help much to overcome the sluggish, heavy controls. the increased stall speed was also blamed on the engine.
