He passed away yesterday. There are many stories available from Rolling Stone to his main publisher, The Washington Post. I'm not including links because many of these may be behind paywalls. If people show an interest I can dig up some articles later. One of the comments repeated about him today was that if the streets of New York could talk, they'd sound like Pete Hamill. He lived a classic newspaper journalist's life which for him included a lot of drinking with other journalists. It was a focus of one of his books. By the time he was interviewed later in life by Terry Gross, he hadn't had a drink in over a decade. |

I hope his last years were good (though I don't suppose he'd have been happy with many aspects of US national politics) |

Billy Hamill, who also drank too much, when he made the rounds of the saloons in his neighborhood of Brooklyn, was always asked to sing. Here's one of the songs: Paddy McGinty's Goat |
