Fresh Air on NPR re-ran sections of interviews with the great New York columnist, journalist, and author Pete Hamill. He passed away yesterday. There are many stories available from Rolling Stone to his main publisher, The Washington Post. I'm not including links because many of these may be behind paywalls. If people show an interest I can dig up some articles later. One of the comments repeated about him today was that if the streets of New York could talk, they'd sound like Pete Hamill.

He lived a classic newspaper journalist's life which for him included a lot of drinking with other journalists. It was a focus of one of his books. By the time he was interviewed later in life by Terry Gross, he hadn't had a drink in over a decade.

A reason to keep it above the line.

Pete Hammill won a Grammy for doing the liner notes for the album "Blood on the Tracks".

I don't know what connections Pete Hamill had with folk and traditional music, but he was am important journalist when I was young and also I think he was related to some people I knew in Belfast ... so yes I would like to read more about him and wallow in nostalgia. I hope his last years were good (though I don't suppose he'd have been happy with many aspects of US national politics)

He had a connection with folk & traditional music thru his daddy, as you may learn from his autobiography _A Drinking Life_. Billy Hamill, who also drank too much, when he made the rounds of the saloons in his neighborhood of Brooklyn, was always asked to sing. Here's one of the songs: Paddy McGinty's Goat

Thanks for the spelling correction. This article may be behind a paywall but I was able to get to it without a subscription.

Almost.
The link doesn't work because there are more numerals at the end than the numeral "1".
