Tech: Google Play

Google seem to be forcing a move from Google Music to YouTube music. This doesn't seem to have an option to play music downloaded to my devices without an internet connection! Reading through the FAQs it seems I might have to have a Premium membership to play stuff offline, but other posts seem to indicate that I can continue with the free membership but I will have to download my files again!
Has anyone been through this yet? Can you explain the options? Is there another player I could use?

Google emailed to tell me that I had "spent time building my Google Play Music library", which was news to me since I've never used Google Play Music.

This article gives some options, and mentions using Google Takeout to download music you bought. If you're a subscriber and don't own the music you can only play it though one of their services, of course.

To play music or videos on Android I use VLC - which is pretty basic but is free, open-source, and doesn't nag me or try to sell me anything. You could try that. But there must be plenty of other players for Android.

Somewhere along the way, I must have clicked something that allowed Google to archive the music from my hard drive. I used Media Monkey forever, but then switched to Microsoft Media Player. But now that I look at Google Play, I see that it has a very nice collection of folk music that came from my hard drive.
Guess I'll have to explore it.

Better be quick then, Joe. Its a pity its going, I found it simple to use with a very clean interface.
