The political strife in the US is so high already that when McConnell tries to put a judge in place now, especially after not letting Obama fill a seat a year out from an election, there may be enough pressure on the entire senate to stand in his way. Ruth's life was remarkable, but her absence is going to be dreadful. |

RBG, a 2018 documentary, did an excellent job of telling her whole life story and conveying her intellect and personality. On the Basis of Sex is a 2018 biographical drama that covers Ginsberg's legal education and early career, from about 1956 until she won an important gender discrimination case in 1973 [the Supreme Court declined to hear this case, thus upholding the decision of the 10th Circuit]. These two movies made us fall in love with Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She served her country and its people well. May she rest in peace. And may her successor be her equal. -Joe Offer- |

There's no upside to voting "Yes". Republican voters are going to vote to re-elect them and Democratic voters are going to vote against them whether they vote "Yes" or "No". It's the independents who are the key, and pissing off even a handful of them by seconding McConnell's hypocrisy could be costly. |

If nothing else, they offer a look at a life well-lived and give people goals to set for themselves. As to whether this collective grief and appreciation will have an impact on just a few members of the senate, time will tell. If they project that Trump is going down and McConnell may lose his post as leader in the senate, then a preemptive conciliatory abstention from voting now will be to their benefit in 2021. Serving everyone to serve themselves, but whatever it takes. |

The complicating factor is that if, as seems likely, Trump kicks up a ruckus about the validity of a vote that goes against him, and it gets pushed up for the Supreme Court to determine things, there's a good chance of a four four split with an eight member court. Is it possible some of the judges might actually decide to act as judges rather than as political placemen in that situation? |

And I have to add in an appreciation of Sandra Day O'Connor who RBG also gave credit to as a pioneer in the placement of women into the Supreme Court. As to the current fracas, it is politics in the raw. POWER. Mitch McConnell and President Trump are in their current positions, and they know it, precisely to take advantage of the situation that Mitch McConnell has engineered. There is reason to hope: Not a few times the selection of a Justice has resulted in a person who does not jive with the expectations of the chooser. Also: while this is a matter of politics, there are still quite strong traditions of judicial equanimity or at least the appearance of such. And again, to stay with the subject of the thread, Ruth Bader Ginsburg will remain an inspiration of a life well lived, not easy, but not supposed to be easy. One of those cases of someone with specific goals and concerns, the expansion of rights under the law to women, being an example to all humans. Making us Americans better at being ourselves and a little more conscience of how we can achieve that. |
