Lyr Req: Carlisle Hall

The Wikipedia entry for The Cruel Mother lists several variants, one of which is "Carlisle Hall".

I can't find anything on this ballad/song other than references back to The Cruel Mother.

Does anyone have the lyrics and the tune?

All the best
Harry

I believe it's a typo, it should be "Carlisle Wall".

Paul and Linda Adams sang "The Sun Shines Fair on Carlisle Wall" on their 1975 album "Far Over the Fell: Songs and Ballads of Cumbria".

Silly Wizard sang "Carlisle Wall" on their 1976 album "Silly Wizard":

She`s leaned her head against a thorn,
The sun shines fair on Carlisle wa';
And there she has her young babe born,
And the lyon shall be lord of a'.

"Smile no sae sweet, my bonnie babe,
The sun shines fair on Carlisle wa';
An ye smile sae sweet ye'll smile me dead,"
And the lyon shall be lord of a'.

She's dug a grave by the light o' the moon,
The sun shines fair on Carlisle wa';
And there she's buried her sweet babe in,
And the lyon shall be lord of a'.

As she was going to the church,
The sun shines fair on Carlisle wa';
She saw a sweet babe in the porch,
And the lyon shall be lord of a'.

"O bonnie babe, an ye were mine,
The sun shines fair on Carlisle wa';
I wiil clead you in silk and sabelline,"--
And the lyon shall be lord of a'.

"O mother mine, when I was thine,
The sun shines fair on Carlisle wa';
To me ye were na half sae kind,
And the lyon shall be lord of a'.

"But now I'm in the heavens hie,
The sun shines fair on Carlisle wa';
And ye have the pains of hell to dree"--
And the lyon shall be lord of a'.

Thank you, Reinhard.

You could well be correct about the typo in the Wiki article.

However, I have found a reference to a song called "Carlisle Hall" indexed in 'Ghosts in Popular Culture and Legend' edited by June Pulliam and Anthony J. Fonseca but, at £46.30, I'd prefer to find a more affordable way of chasing the song.

Of course, this one may not be the variant of The Cruel Mother listed in the Wiki article.

Yes, I’m sure it would be The Sun Shines Fair on Carlisle Wall... which was written by Sir Walter Scott, based on a version of The Cruel Mother. It’s in his Lay of the Last Minstrel, sung by Albert Graeme. Dante Gabriel Rossetti even did a painting based on the song: https://www.flickr.com/photos/sheepdog_rex/8386579339/
