This is a song popular in the great depression, it starts, "on monday we had bread and gravy, on tuesday, gravy and bread,---------but friday was the best day of all, we had gravy without any bread. Any of you old timers might remember this one? Help please!

Didn't realize when I posted in the other thread that it was one with a generic title, so I am posting my message here as well.

Grandpa Jones did a version which was somewhat different ~~ haven't heard it since the early 50s or so. If memory serves, it went something like this.

On Monday we have bread and gravy
On Tuesday it's gravy and bread
On Wednesday and Thursday,it's gravy on toast
But that's only gravy and bread
On Friday it's rye bread and gravy
On Saturday it's whole wheat instead
But Sunday's a treat, 'cause we never get meat
We just have gravy without any bread!

Whatever else there may have been to his version, I've forgotten. Something like: Now everyone's working at our house, but you can't count the money we make . . .

If you REALLY are interested in the Grandpa Jones recording, it MIGHT be available at bluesworld.com Here is their comment on availability for their VINYL German imports: We do not carry stock on most of titles. They have to be special ordered from Germany so there will be a six to eight week delay in filling orders for these. Credit card orders will not be charged until we receive the merchandise.

All these albums are limited pressings and once stock is exhausted they will probably not be repressed. Order early for best fill and, if possible, list some alternates.

GRANDPA JONES A Day In The Country Arts Country 30008 The Champion/ What Has She Got/ Bread and Gravy/ The Trader/ Gooseberry Pie/ Old Dan Tucker/ A High Silk Hat and a Gold Top Walking Cane/ The Closer to the Bone (the Sweeter Is the Meat)/ You're Never Too Old for Love/ Dear Old Sunny South South by the Sea/ Old Blue/ That New Vitamine

His version is not available on any other recording that I am aware of.

My grandfather and family sing that song but it is a bit Different. I also have on tape a version by Grant Rogers But it is still different it goes I've traveled this wide world all over ect. The version that now absent my grandfather unfortunately is as follows:

BREAD AND GRAVY

I've traveled this country all over,
And been to the best of hotels,
Some were good some were bad some were lousy
And some were the best that they had,
Now the last place I stopped was a Lou Lou,
So quite so clean and so neat,
But you'll wonder why I am alive today,
When I tell you what they gave us to eat…

On Monday was bread and gravy,
On Tuesday was gravy and bread,
And on Wednesday and Thursday
Was gravy and toast which is nothing gravy and bread

So on Friday I went to the landlord,
And asked for a bit of a change,
So on Saturday morning by way of a change…
We had gravy without any bread

That is all I have if anyone has put it to chords and music or has anymore lyrics please let me know.

Hard for me to read about this song without mentioning Smokey Greene--an old songster on the job for over 50 years. Smokey has been a favorite in northern new England for decades; he sang on stage at the Opry, and founded my favorite bluegrass festival in Schuylerville, NY. He is a depository of forgotten old songs, and he is still recording--Pinecastle just put out his first CD.

I'm afraid none of you answered the poor guy's question. You certainly cited some wonderful songs but the song the guy wanted is somewhat harder to find (for some unknown reason)

I too am looking for it to play this afternoon but left my lyrics at home. The chords are g-b7; g-c, g-b7, g-c; E7-b7; G-d7
The bridge is c-e7; c-a7; B-bm-d7
"got good reason to be swell, and my clothes they all fit me well
and i wear nice rings"

hope you can find it!

Here's the version I heard growing up:

On Monday we had bread and gravy
On Tuesday we had gravy and bread
On Wednesday and Thursday
We had toast and gravy
But that's only gravy and bread
On Friday we went to the lady
And asked her for something instead
And on Saturday morning
Without any warning
We had gravy without any bread!

On Tuesday was gravy on bread
On Wed. & Thurs. was gravy on toast
But that's only gravy on bread
On Friday we went to the landlord
And asked for something instead
So on Saturday evening but way of a change
We had gravy without any bread!

My late father-in-law was a song & dance man in Vaudeville, and "Slum and Gravy" was what he called his version:

"While traveling all over the country,
We stayed in some fancy hotels.
Some were good, and some were bad,
And some of the rooms were like cells.
Well, the last one we stopped at was a Daisy,
So comfy and cozy and neat.
It's a wonder we didn't go crazy,
For this is what we had to eat.

On Monday, we had bread and gravy,
On Tuesday, 'twas gravy and bread.
On Wednesday and Thursday,
'Twas gravy and toast,
But that's only gravy and bread.
So on Friday we said to the landlord,
Can't you please give us something instead?
So on Saturday morn, just by way of a change,
We got gravy without any bread."

I traveled all over this country,
I lived in the best hotels,
Some were good some were bad some were lousy,
But most of the rooms looked like cells,
A room that I had was a pippin,
So neat so clean and so bright,
It was a wonder I didn't go crazy,
When I found out what we had for dinner that night,

On Monday we had bread and gravy,
On Tuesday we had gravy and bread,
On Wednesday and Thursday we had gravy and toast
But that's only gravy and bread,
On Friday I spoke to the landlord
To give us something else instead,
So on Saturday morning in slight of a change,
We had gravy without any bread.

That is what I remember from my grandfather singing and playing on the piano

My Mom would sing this to us in the car on long car rides. It took me years to learn to sing it too. But I love this song. And now that my Mom is gone it is a good memory. Here is the way I learned to sing it:

We traveled all over the country
And we stayed in some lovely hotels.
Some were alike and some different,
And some were in rooms just like cells.
But the last one that we stayed at was a daisy.
The rooms were so clean and so neat.
But the one thing that drove us so crazy
Was what they gave us to eat.

On Monday we had bread and gravy.
On Tuesday we had gravy and bread.
On Wednesday and Thursday we had toast and gravy,
But that's still gravy and bread.
So on Friday I asked of the landlord,
"Could you please give us something instead?"
So on Saturday morning for a way of a change,
.... We had gravy without any bread.

That's how I remember it. Wish I could find out where it came from.

As our late and very much missed session mate, David Behm always sang it,

On Monday we have bread and gravy
On Tuesday it's gravy and bread
On Wednesday and Thursday,it's gravy and toast
But that's only gravy and bread.
On Friday we went to the landlord
To get something else instead.
So on Saturday morn
Just as sure as you're born,
We had gravy without any bread!

David learned it many many years ago from his mother.

I've sung it a few times at workshops or song circles that have gotten off on food songs. (Along with "Oh my darlin', oh, my darlin', oh my darlin' clementines / Bought a bad box, taste like damp socks / Damned things cost five ninety-nine.")

Interesting that most of the submissions say Friday we went to the landlord. My father used to sing the same song (which he learned in the Army during World War 2) and instead of landlord it was Major:
On Monday we had bread and gravy.
Tuesday was gravy and bread.
Wednesday and Thursday was gravy on toast which is nothing but gravy and bread.
On Friday we went to the Major.
Said "please give us something instead".
So Saturday morning by way of a change...we had gravy without any bread.

My Dad used to sing this song. He would have been 108 years old on Halloween. He lived during the great depression in Brooklyn NY. His words were:

"On Monday we had bread and gravy,
On Tuesday was gravy and bread,
On Wednesday and Thursday was gravy and toast,
but, that's only gravy and bread,

On Friday we went to the landlord,
and asked him to change the menu,
And, on Saturday morning, by way of a change,
we had gravy without any bread.

My mother used to sing that all the time. Unfortunately it was mostly true in her case. They would have a stew pot on the stove and throw in whatever they could scrounge up. This was during WWII and the father was either disabled or had already passed away. So those were tough times.
