This breaks my heart. Charley Pride was a large part of my mid-youth. Loved his voice, his songs, his story.

I can't believe no thread alrwady mourns this great musician.

Whom I have confused for decades with both Charlie Poole and John Prine.

The man who proved that if white people can sing the blues, then black people could sing country. And why not?

Last night my wife told me she'd heard on the news that Charlie Rich had died..

So we went to youtube to reacquaint ourselves with his singing..

.. Let's get it right tonight...

Ah, Charley Pride and the Grand Old Opry.

As long as an old iconic musician named Roy Acuff
held a high office at the Grand Old Opry,
there was not a snowball-in-hell's chance
of an African-American allowed to be a Grand Old Opry member.

Roy Acuff died at a ripe old age, and
the Grand Old Opry, quietly and with great haste,
convened (the officers did)
and got Charley Pride voted, IMMEDIATELY, into the Grand Old Opry.
I mean, they didn't waste a SECOND.

I'll never ever forget that.

Article in The Boot
As I understand it, there was no problem with Roy Acuff."Hank Williams, Roy Acuff, Eddy Arnold and Minnie Pearl are just a few of the greats I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with throughout the many years I’ve been a part of the Grand Ole Opry," he says. "All those people were such great entertainers, and wonderful people to be around. I am very grateful to have known them. They are all greatly missed."

From the same article:"I had a standing invitation to join the Opry since 1967, but they had a requirement that you had to play 26 Saturdays per year, and those were the best days where you could draw and make your money out on the road," Pride recalls to Country Stars Central. "You weren’t making that much when I was starting out. I made about a nickel a single from RCA, and $100 to $200 for a gig on the road. At that time, it was an economical thing for me, and I didn’t argue with it."

Grateful to you, keberoxu, for the uncomplimentary details, previously unknown to me, on Acuff.

On another topic, do you, keberoxu, know why we have not heard from chantylass, at this coziest of cafes, since early in the current pandemic, ie in March 2020? Frankly, I am worried by the lengthy silence.

The Acuff details were fictitious.

...Unless you think Charley Pride was lying.
